I REALLY hope there are some Aussies out there who can help me out with this.

I need to obtain an Australian Criminal Records Check from the Australian Federal Police for a visa application. The fee is AU$105, which must be paid in the exact amount by money order or cheque cashable at a major Australian bank.

I went to the post office to buy a money order, but after about 20 minutes of searching and phone calls, they told me that money orders were not available in Australian currency. (Incidentally, my dad checked at the post office in Canada, and they told him the same thing there.)

My wife spent the better part of the morning calling several banks, and they said they don't do cheques, only wires.

I checked Western Union's website, which said that they do not offer a chequing service in South Korea.

I called the Australian Police, and they told me that they have no electronic payment methods available, and they do not accept wires.

Short of flying down to Australia to pay my $105, what can I do?

Try the Korea Exchange Bank (KEB). If this can't provide it you're out of luck. They're your best bet. Most Korean banks only provide money orders in US dollars. But I got one in British pounds at KEB. They might also do Australian money orders. Get a Korean friend to give them a call Monday morning. You might be in luck.

Are you sure you need a federal one? Where will your application be lodged?
Canberra?

If you have a friend or a relative, they might be able to lodge it for you on your behalf.

I sent the paperwork home and had someone get the money order on my behalf and they lodged it on my behalf (one time), and send it to the Police HQ (in Brisbane, Im frm QLD).

You need to ask for an International draft, try any bank, Woori or KEB.

Also for an E2 you don't need a fingerprint check, the $43 name check is sufficient.

Stick to the AFP check as these are quicker than most state police checks (Qld Police quoted me 5 weeks but that was over 18 months ago).

If you want it for immigration, you don't need an apostile, you can get it certified at the Aussie embassy for about w20,000. If it's for EPIK they will probably want the apostile, they are ridiculous on their regulations.

Sorry to thread-highjack, but is there anyway to get the certification done from Busan?

If not, getting the KTX to Seoul for a day might work out cheaper than the $120 apostille stamp.
(I'm losing my job soon, and getting another national police check done just in case).
Have any Aussies in Busan been here, done this?

I don't think so, as the consulate in Busan is an honourary one.

You could try calling them on 051 647 1762.

If they can't the Embassy in Seoul can do things by mail, call them on 02 2003 0100. This will be cheaper than the KTX option. Good luck mate.

Hi,

This and if the telephone is a pain you can email them.

[email protected]. They will do it by post as long as you send a money order to pay the fee. This is a Korean money order. It can be gotten at any post office in the amount of their services and then included to cover the fee. This is called an 우편환 (Woo Pyun Hwan).

Good Luck Wink

A State criminal bg check is only about $45 Au, & took me about 2 weeks in Qld, in February / March this year. Then I paid $70, to have it apostilled.

Australia Post might be worth contacting for money orders:

http://www.auspost.com.au/IXP/0,1465,CH2020%257EMO19,00.html#Shop

If they don't do it by email/internet, perhaps friend or family in Australia? KEB are great. Another good option. Some branches are open on Sunday, specifically for foreigners.

@ Michelle + big_fella1

Thanks for the info. It's great to know this now.
There's not many Aussie only threads around here, so its good to get a few relevant replies, and even better to get some good news.
