Robert Brydon, a former Port Moody, B.C., resident who is married to a Korean and has taught in the country since 2005, said he's been stunned by the rhetoric coming from the Anti-English Spectrum Group that targets the 2,000 foreign English teachers in the country.
==========================
I think that number needs some fixing, but otherwise maybe attention on these scumbags will help you guys a little bit? |
2,000 foreign teachers? It is more like 20,000 foreign teachers -
Immigration statistics for 2008 show that out of the 1,175,420 foreign nationals registered in Korea, 19,771 foreigners were registered as being on E-2 teaching visas. http://atek.or.kr/ |

Don't let AES find that out, they'd really lose it! |

Does the AES care about female foreign teachers? How about lesbian foreign teachers who might, um, interact with Korean girls? Or is sex between foreign men and Korean women all they really care about? What about gay male foreigners getting down with Korean dudes? Is that a concern of theirs? |

You can say whatever you want i think that all we ask is that you stick to the facts as they affect you personally and try to leave emotion out of it.
note that there are many arguments happening on this site and most are getting lumbered into one thought - so do your research.
Extra edited bit follows just in case your a newb and am thinking AES what???
Now I am firmly in the camp of AES is bad!
Posters keep asking for proof. Now it may exist out there but tell me exactly where are you to find it in a foreign country with a foreign language - a extremely time consuming task combine this with Govt involved and it gets tougher and more frustrating.
So what do you do? rely on others - that has dangers what is thier(my) agenda.
Make up your own minds and source as much knowledge as you can to satisfy yourself.
Having said this below is a good place to start - it is a blog. But you are a university educated person and hopefully are aware of how the process for english teaching has changed and when it changed - use logic.
Click on the pictures cut and paste them expand them so you can read the text.
Make up your own mind - then perhaps come back to this discussion and contribute one line of text- a simple line to stipulate whether you think, and we will keep this simple, AES has influenced/ or not influenced the Visa rules for E2, oh and if by chance you are a public school teacher - influenced /or not influenced the proceduce required for you to sign a new contract for another year.
there are other bloggers out there with info look for them if you are so inclined.
section of text from Andrea blog on Who is AES part number 90 - it is a very long blog and some posters have decided not actually worth reading in FULL before espressing an opinion.

The bottom of this poster shows the list of participants of this very significant meeting. There are several important officials from the Ministry of Justice, the foreign-policy division of the Immigration Office, representatives from the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, and another representative from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. From private sector, the Director of Korea Association of Foreign Language Academies is also in attendance. And finally, Mr. Lee Eun Ung or Chairman Lee as he is referred to here.

Well for goodness sake let them know that character represents a small minority of fools. Most of us love our jobs and living here, are married (or have been) to Koreans and not hunted down or killed. Let them know that the real struggle new teachers face is not being treated professionally or ripped off. Also let them know that Korea has a huge prostitution industry and only an itsy bitsy bit of that is supported by foreigners. |

Lee eng eung or whatever his name is obvioulsy has a hard on for male esl teachers because they are the only ones he targets. According to him in an interview AES's goal is primarily to save Korean women from the masses of "rapist, expat teachers" . He also goes on ranting about how all these teachers are also here with "fake degrees" as if this were exclusively a requirement of a teacher predisposed to committing felony sexual offenses. To date Lee has not provided any instances where a foreign teacher has actually raped a Korean woman. I remember an instance many years ago where a couple of US soldiers did but AES seems to only target ESL teachers.
Lee's pathological preoccupation probably stems from some personal affront (perhaps a missus having an affair, daughter dating afforementioned), because apparently Lee works a regular job and does all the AES crap in his spare time. |

Yeah, I knew that. Just an extreme example of an ajosshi who feels sick at the sight of his women (since he owns them all) with anyone besides his brothers, who can do no wrong and never visit girls for money. |

Make sure you discuss the deatails in the Human Rights report, as well as statistics showing that Koreans commit crimes at 5 times the rate that foreigners do. Also mention that WE are very often the victims of criminal behaviour at the hands of our employees.
Also mention that they don't care about Western women sleeping with Korean dudes. They just don't want Western men touching korean women.
Mention that every country has hate groups. Only in Korea, however, does the government climb into bed with them (pardon the pun). |

Where's Urban Myth? Wasn't he the one ridiculing us for thinking that we could get our story in the Western press. It's starting, albeit with an extremely poorly written piece, but it is getting covered.
Please take the time to send out a letter to your home newspaper. It's time to stand up for ourselves. Complaining is one thing. Doing something about the racist stereotyping of Westerners in Korea is another. No Korean group will ever come to our defense. We have to do it ourselves. |
