The Yongsan I-Park Emart sells a decent feta, not that jar of little Danish feta in marinade, but a block of feta that has a nice, tangy (if somewhat mild) flavor. It costs about 10000 won for a small block of 180 grams. It's in the cheese case in the wine section of the store. They have some wildly expensive goat cheese there, too. And a few other cheeses that are at least a little off the beaten track for Korea, Haloumi and some others.
Labneh is just yogurt, so you can easily make that at home. Just add salt to unflavored yogurt and strain it in cheesecloth until it's at the consistency you like, and pour a little olive oil on it. |
I hate the price for the jarred Danish feta but I do use the oil/spice mix to hold my olives. I separate 3-4 jars, put the feta in a glass jar, and the oil and drained olives in another. I also use the oil for cooking eggs or making veggie sautee. |

Whereabouts, Tzechuk? |
Central City (Express Bus Terminal in Seocho) Shinsaegae Department Store has a good cheese selection. Last year they had an import of a lot of English cheeses. I bought a truck load..

| It wasn't as much as I thought it would be - may be 6,500 won for 150g? I know it was a lot more than what I would pay back home... |

Extra mature cheddar, not the American crap (sorry) but proper aged cheddar;; the type with salt crystals in the middle.

In theory, shiploads of great European cheeses should be arriving sometime around Summer 2010 when the FTA with the EU comes into effect.......
.......I predict a little more choice, but still crazy 'everything-imported-should-be-expensive-like-it's-still-1956' prices. |

My dad is a cheese salesman... did really well in his heyday too. House stocked with imported European cheese "samples"... and then I became allergic to dairy |

the E-mart in a nearby city used to carry cheddar but hasn't for nearly two years, then suddenly they started carrying it again, shelf empty by the time another waygook customer and I finished with it |

I miss Scottish Cheddar: Galloway, Lockerbie etc
If I develop a craving for Cheese on toast then I go to Homeplus (in Jamsil) for McLelland's Seriously Strong Cheddar. |
