It is only the second country after the United States to check foreigners in this way.
But unlike the US, which only checks foreign visitors, Japan will require foreigners living in Japan to be checked each time they enter.
The Japanese government says it is an anti-terrorism measure but others say it is discrimination.
Any foreigner entering Japan will now be fingerprinted and photographed. |
At least in Korea they make it clear WHY they want foriegners to go through checks. They don't hide behind the moniker of "terrorism".
Because Japanese know how big a terrorism target Japan is. |

When I went to Japan in Feb 2008 they were already doing this. I got fingerprinted and photographed at Kansai.

Maybe Japan has taken a similar path to Korea I guess.
Is anti-english teacher sentiment widespread there as well? |

Not that I've noticed, as said it's an old story, and it's for everyone, it doesn't matter if you're an English teacher, foreign salaryman, tourist, whatever....you get the prints. I've been fingerprinted the last several times I've entered Japan, it's a painless process. Only annoying thing about it is my local airport (Fukuoka) must have dodgy machines as it takes 2 or 3 tries to register my prints (maybe my fingers are too fat!).
Anyway, a big story in the local press today was a Chinese woman who had been deported before got busted for successfully re entering Japan by spending around 10000 USD on surgeries to alter her fingerprints....so the system is not foolproof it appears (she got busted for some unrelated offence and they found out later how she got into the country).
Oh, now I remember it, a few months back a previously deported Korean woman got back in by applying tape to her fingers.... |

I was reading THAT article, and this article was the #1 link for "related stories". I didn't realize the article was 2 years old.

It's a pretty efficient system to be honest, all I was concerned about was my hair when getting my picture taken |

Ive dealt with this every time I go through Incheon. Last time, only the 4 white people on our flight needed to be "re-snanned" at customs when exiting the airport. I'd love to see airports in the States try to only re-scan black people, Im sure they would love it |

I'm sure if those black people mentioned the words "Allah" or "Pakistan" they'd be rescanned in a heartbeat. |

I saw multiple people re-scanned, regardless of race. It's quite likely the white people you saw were just new to the whole thing and didn't do it correctly the first time around, while the other passengers may be regulars. |

I have no problem with the system. I think it is a great system. Every country wants to watch who comes into their borders. That is why we have passports, visas, etc. to begin with.
The reason they fingerprint and photograph foreigners is because we don't have anything on file already! Sure, you could fingerprint Japanese, but why? Who knows, maybe they do this needlessly already as well?
As a person who lives in Japan, and has went through immigration many times already, I think they DO do this to Japanese as well. |
