Let's not toast the failures, Nathan. That would be cynical. Let's toast to our success. The only civilization in the world that can brag that its poorest citizens are its fattest.
The people that you describe in your post (those in the third world) are those who have not yet discovered the miracle of capitalism and democracy. We westerners have discovered. We have invented everything from the flying shuttle to the space shuttle. We are so rich that we can throw away food.
But, and this is important, we create much more wealth than we use. Think of all of the wealth that the light bulb has created or that the internet has created. If we were to compensate Thomas Edison or Bill Gates or whoever for what they have created they would be gizillionaires. |

Anyone been to an American restaurant lately?
The servings are enormous...send a Korean or whoever else to the States...and 40% still left on the plate is just about right.
I have a hard time myself finishing 60% of a plate of food...the servings are just that massive. The thing is is that there are so many obese and overweight who CAN eat the massive servings...that I think a restaurant has to consider that and pile on the maximum. |

I think food that makes it to the plate which is then subsequently not eaten, would make up a small proportion of "wasted food." I wouldn't even consider that waste, because someone bought it and got the enjoyment out of the 60% of the meal they ate. Eating anymore wouldn't actually give them additional enjoyment/value.
I would guess that the majority of the waste happens in the supply chain. If you have ever worked in a super market, you will know that large chains can throw up to 100 loaves a day into the trash. This isn't an issue of people not finishing their dinner or eating meals that are too large. |
