Has anyone noticed the IMAX theaters aren't that big? I've seen a few in the IMAX and have noticed that don't seem that massive from what I remember back home.
Am I imagining things? |

The 'IMAX' in the name of the theater refers to the fact that the theater uses 'IMAX Digital' equipment, not that it is a huge honking IMAX screen like we remember from our childhood.
Here is a good article that explains it a bit better than I can. Make sure you scroll down to the graphic which shows the size difference between the traditional IMAX screens and the new IMAX screens.

Yeah, its kind of a rip-off, but they're pulling the same crap back home. |

All the IMAXes I've been to (Raleigh, NC and Myrtle Beach, SC) had the huge screens. Deep Sea in 3-D changed my life. |

Yeah, they're a bit bigger than the normal screens, but have a crystal clear picture and amazing sound. I can't wait to see Avatar 3-D on IMAX here. It's worth the extra couple of bucks. |

The new theater at Yeongdeungpo is supposedly the largest screen in the world. |

Daejon Science Park has a dome IMAX sponsored by SK the last time I went there. It's an exhibit, however, not an actual movie. |

Another board member called me on this last night. I've been to the Yongsan I-Max, and from what I can remember, I was disappointed. I felt like the room was smaller and we were thrust right up close to the screen. It felt kind of like sitting with your nose to a 42" LCD TV. Sitting too close is not fun, and it seemed like to make up for the small room (and smaller than normal I-Max screen) they just pressed you right up close to it.
I'd seen another I-max in Kansas City about 9 years ago, and was more impressed with both the video and audio set-up. The audio set-up in KC had multiple distinct speakers behind the screen. |

To provide the best image for such a large screen, the theatre is equipped with two Christie XB projectors with special lenses and two Harkness screens linked together. For the best sound, it uses an 11.2-channel stereoscopic sound system which provides uniform distribution of audio levels in every part of the auditorium. The Starium also features specially designed premium seats with extra legroom |

The Starium theater at the Yeongdeungpo CGV multiplex has the largest screen in the world, measuring 31.4 meters (103 feet) in length and 13 meters in width

The Starium boasts 50 speakers, more than double the number that regular theaters often use.
The speakers are actually the same ones found in concert halls. They are spread out over a long line, and each speaker can be adjusted manually in order to balance the sound across the theater.
Additionally, the subwoofers at this theater are two to four times more powerful than those in regular movie venues.

Depends on the IMAX screen. For example, in Richmond, Va the IMAX theater in the Science Museum was one of those big "dome" type screens where the picture just emcompasses you.
Whereas in the Smithsonian in WAshington DC, the IMAX screen was jsut a big movie screen. It didn't "surround" you like the other IMAX screens I've been to. |

The world's largest cinema screen and IMAX screen is in the LG IMAX theatre in Darling Harbour, Sydney. It is 29.42m (approximately 8 stories) high by 35.73m wide covering an area of more than 1,015 square metres.[2]
CGV Starium Theater, which boasts the world's largest movie screen, measuring 31.4 metres (103 feet) wide and 13 metres (43 feet) high (listed in the Guinness Book of World Records).
now, the koreans are saying they have the largest screen in the world
but how can it be when it seems the Australian one is way bigger in height!
still made by LG but come on.. the Aussie one kills the Staruim!!
its not only the width, the height should be considered too...
and the Aussie one towers over the Staruim!, so does the 63 building..
I guess what the Staruim meant to say was, the widest screen in the world! hahahaha |

BE, I've always found IMAX theatres in the US to be "right up front," never really been a big fan of THOSE personally. Here it seems like the the term IMAX just means "large screen."
No, the best screens were the ones designed for the 70 mm films, like Indian Hills in Omaha. Too bad we had to build another parking lot... |

I think the issue is that IMAX native film has a much different aspect ratio than movies do. IMAX film is much more square, so hence the taller screen. If you scroll down to the bottom of the link, you'll see some size comparisons.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_ratio_%28image%29
If it's an IMAX screen that's been put in place to specifically show hollywood movies, then there's no need for the height. If you're playing native IMAX 70mm documentaries, then, yeah ... watching it on those mammoth IMAX screens is pretty cool. |

The one in Richmond is Omnimax. I always assumed that was a different technology. |
