I've been using twitter for awhile but have yet to use it educationally (that is, with students). I'm wondering if anyone out there has?

Also, do you use twitter? How? In what ways?

I use it to send messages to selective ELT friends. Also to consolidate information of two sites.

https://twitter.com/eflclassroom
and https://twitter.com/eltjobs

What do you tweet about?

I use twitter, but very rarely tweet. I use it as a sort of customized news aggregator, so I follow lots of different media outlets, and editors for them, an entertaining celebrity or two, programs I'm involved in, or want to be involved in etc., along with a few friends.

I have a twitter and rarely tweet. I follow friends from facebook, makeup artists and the wonder girls.

The few times I have tweeted would be about clothes, what I ate that day, or something I saw on television.

I used it for a day. Didn't see the point of it.

Everyone I know uses facebook. I really don't want to follow celebrities on twitter. I really don't care enough about them to check their updates on twitter.

If you have a big following then Twitter would be great. If 3 people are following you, then what's the point of writing anything at all?

You can always be a follower???? Or maybe that's no fun? But someone has to do it! I follow several others and surprisingly enough, get some good sites/info. However, the other traditional means for finding info. is much more effective (reading blogs, search, rss and reader etc...)

I read somewhere that digital natives (those of the generation where tech was ubiquitous) don't tweet and don't give a twit. They just are hooked to their cell phone and wonder why do it any other way but txt msg?

So twitter is a baby boomer, digital immigrant type of phenomena. My own question is, given that demographic, will it be sustainable or is it just hot air....?

That sounds like bull to me. Most people tweet from their phones- so there's no separation between the two, and if you look at trending topics most of the time there's a Disney manufactured celeb or three on there, that no one over 17 cares about.

Peppermint,

It is a vastly discussed and researched area. Really. And all conclusions are that not many teens tweet at all. Why?

There are many reasons but the two biggest are 1) the cool factor (text wins) and 2) cost (don't send tweets that just kills their pocketbook to hook up to the net - today's teens are terribly cost conscious - this is a big change from previous generations).

Anyways, I googled "teens and twitter" . No funny business. Here are JUST the first 5 items for your review.

Quote:
1. Know the rules
Let's first lay the ground rules.

a. You are not currently allowed to follow a username after you have "unfollowed" that user; so you can't refollow at this time.
b. You can follow up to 2000 users before the 10% rule kicks in. You can follow more users after you get more followers.

Ok, that is the rules. Let's start explaining twitter. First off it makes a lousy first impression. Announcing to the world what you're eating for breakfast when you have no followers makes you seem a bit out of it. And chances are, your first ten followers are family members who don't want to know either. So what is twitter all about? Information. News. Issues. Topics. Technology. Opinions. Conversations. Please read Time Magazines Twitter.com cover story from earlier this year(2009). http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1902604,00.html

2. Follow a lot of awesome tweeters. Few ego filled stars http://www.wefollow.com http://www.wthashtag.com
Don't follow famous users for the most part. Sure you can follow some, but generally your wasting your time. And your limited to 2000 until you get enough followers. So just follow about 20 of your favorite stars and leave it at that. They won't follow you back anyways.

You need to have some interests. use http://www.wthashtag.com to find interesting topics you like. Could be news, football, or whatever. Follow users who tweet about topics you care about. THEN RETWEET their tweets. This will attract them to your tweets and they will follow you back. Use http://www.wefollow.com also to find usernames who tweet stuff your intersted in.

Spend your first few days on twitter following 1000 of the most interesting twitter users you can find. Then retweet their messages you like.
3. Retweet messages you like.
This is important. This will attract users to your account and your tweets. They will follow you.

4. Use hashtags almost always.
Now after reading that you should get a idea of what twitter do. How do people communicate on twitter about various topics? They use hashtags. For example, #obama would be all sorts of tweets about President Obama, but there's also #BHO. News? Try #cnn #bbc. Some people don't like #cnn and think CNN is going a terrible job, so check out #msmfail or #cnnfail . These searches will give you a timeline of comments with these "hashtags". SO use hashtags to get your tweets a wider audience and bring yourself more followers.

5. User third party software
Twitter.com's website is fairly simple and lousy for tweeting. They do have a new lists feature, but it isn't all that grand. Use for example http://www.tweetree.com is a great website to get started. Later you might want to install Adobe Air and Twhirl or some other app that will help you tweet more comfortably.

I was asked some questions about twitter after posting this to another forum. Here is my response.

Quote:
I tried to address that in "Information. News. Issues. Topics. Technology. Opinions. Conversations. Please read Time Magazines Twitter.com cover story from earlier this year(2009). http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1902604,00.html"

You can share information that interests you. And with the right tools you can do it in a hurry. For example, during Korea's match with Iran a few months back, I watched the game on TV here in Korea and from time to time tweeted what was happening, especially the score. People in Iran who were not next to a TV or whatnot were allowed to see an up to the second score of the game. This is just one example. In the Time Magazine article it does a good job explaining where Twitter fits in the "knowledge world". I'll try to paraphrase some of the Time article, but I really suggest you read it. Let say your at a conference on Education. 100 people. Now in the old days you'd get some editorial about the meeting MAYBE in some educational journal. Recently, you might get a blog entry about it but who'd know where the blog was? With Twitter, you can now have the "world" join in the conference by having those in the meeting tweeting with those outside the meeting. Please read the article.

I am following 2000+ twitter users that I find interesting. I can get information about blog posts and "news" before CNN or BBC do. The other night some states in the US had special elections to fill empty seats. Twitter did a better job of covering the situation on the ground then CNN did. Remember the Iran election? 90% of what CNN was reporting was on Twitter first. Also, with Twitter giving up to the second news and information around the globe, this allows people to get information before say a "Google News" does. Or Yahoo News. Or before Google's bots would find so and so's blog. Currently the majority of web traffic to articles, blogs and "news" is generated by people sharing the information on Twitter.

The first picture of the plane in the Hudson River not long ago was a rescue dude tweeting a picture of the plane as he approached it. Twitter had it long before CNN or the Washington Post did. Generally Twitter is about sharing information/news/blogs and such, but conversations and arguments also happen on various hashtags.

The US is in love with USA football for example. #nfl is full of the latest NFL news and injury reports to discussions during the games.

I hope this gives you some idea of Twitter and why some find it useful. Yes, it gives a terrible first impression.

If you'd like to follow me, I'm "economicmayhem" on twitter.

Thanks for the backdrop.

The best beginners and clear explanation of twitter (and much else on the web) is Common craft's stuff.

http://commoncraft.com/twitter
http://commoncraft.com/twitter-search

Twitter search is expanding. For example, my own eltjobs twitter https://twitter.com/eltjobs -- you could search any term, like "kindergarten", "brazil", "professor" and get results up to the second from right now about 150+ ELT jobs posted daily.

Here's an example. Just replace "international" with whatever you want to search for. http://search.twitter.com/search?q=international+from%3Aeltjobs
