honestly,
i'm a slr camera guy for over 10 years.
Get the Samsung VUU WB500 point and shoot
It has a Schneider german 24mm wide angle lens.. wide angle is an absolute must for scenic and group photos as it captures the background to produce a complete photo.
This WB500 also has 720p HD video, which means it is 1 notch down from 1080i HD, which is the highest quality of vid. The video is recorded in mpg format so no conversion needed.. you can see my video "sungkyul university office" on youtube - shot with wb500
wb500 also has photo and video edit built-in to the camera, so no need for photoshop.
this camera is super small and remains the best point and shoot out there! |

Hi, don't know if I can be any help, but I will try. Having spent twelve years as a professional photographer, I always found that much of the time it came down to what camera actually felt the best in your hand when choosing a camera, as most modern camera's have very similar features in each price bracket . All three of these camera's are great quality, and the Lumix and Canon both have similar features for the more advanced photographer, hence the large price. These are high breed mix cameras that are a cross between the more bulky SLR and the compact camera. The Sony is far more geared towards the point and shoot market, but in saying that, I have a little Sony with a Zeiss lenses (same as this) that I use all the time when I don't have my SLR handy and it takes amazing photo's for a point and shoot. Zeiss lenses are the best in the world, but Canon corner the market in professional lenses and the Leica lens of the Lumix is also excellent. I would consider both the G10 and the Lumix if you plan to take more advanced photographs where you need far more control (which both these cameras offer).
If I was you, I would visit several shops and ask to look and handle each of the camera's. this will give you an idea of which one you like best. Then consider the type of photography that you want to do. If you are just using the camera for point and shoot and like the Sony, then go for that. If you are looking for more then whichever feels the best, i'm sure will serve you well as they are both great cameras. Hope this helps in some way. |

Do you know of any good camera shops in Seoul where they speak good English, so they can actually explain the cameras to me? |

Hi, there are two areas of Seoul that both have many camera shops. The Namdaemun area in front of the market only sells cameras and is a great place to visit. Don't be put off by the fact that they only seem to have SLR kit in the windows, as they sell everything photographic there. The other place is Yongsan, although this can be a pain in the bum, as you get hassled a lot by the hundreds of different traders. Yongsan is very spread out, but Namdaemun is quite compact. Good luck and if you want to bounce any questions off me, feel free to PM me. |

That camera is pretty good. One of the students in my photography club has it, and for the size, it packs some power!
I have the Canon Powershot SX200 IS as my point and shoot camera and IMO it is an awesome camera. Some of the shots that I can pull off with it absolutely amaze me. The HD video on it is super high quality.
To the OP: how good are you at using the various settings within a point and shoot camera? |

I will definitely be using "auto" mode on the camera. |

Basically, all point and shoots (digital compacts) offer the same image quality these days. It doesn't matter if it has a leica lens or a canon lens.
If it's for snapshots then almost anything will do! Some have different settings, different features and what not. It's best to look at some cameras in person and have a play around with them and see which one you like.
There's a large mall in Yongsan area with a ton of camera stores which you should visit. Also enquire about last years models, there's not much difference between 8mp and 10mp, although something that records video is always a good thing.
The G10 however is a different beast. Might be a bit overkill if you just want something for snapshots, and it isn't something you can put in your pocket. It has a lot of manual controls and can deliver great results if you're prepared to learn a bit about photography. I have one myself and am very happy. |

Sorry, that Canon was sold already. I forgot to take it down. My bad.
That said, the camera is great. It takes much better shots then a regular compact, but it is big and doesn't fit a pocket so well. I have a Lumix lx3 now and love it. THe pictures are great and it is small enough for me.
Don't worry much about shipping, when I shipped the camera it cost all of 3000won. |

I recommend you go to Namdaemun market. Most of camera shops in Namdaemun can speak English.
There are 2 recommended stores (thanks for these authors):
Yesdica (http://www.davidsmeaton.com/index.php/super-daves-korean-camera-buying-guide/), this is small shop but I like the friendly shop owner. The price is lowest, as I compared to other nearby stores.
Hyosung Camera (http://lifeinflight.wordpress.com/2008/11/29/camera-shopping-in-seoul/), honestly, I don't like this shop. They have good attitude to European and American people (maybe!), but not for people from other countries in Asia.
Another big store is Canon plaza, you should take a look if you want to buy a Canon camera.
Good luck! |

That is about as wrong of a statement that you can make. That's like saying the quality of your eyes don't affect what you see. Between the two, since the canon is sold, I'd go with the panasonic. No one else seems to be addressing your question and that drives me nuts. The panasonic is newer and is the best of panasonic's point and shoots.
In a nutshell, here's what you should know about digital cameras. Ignore megapixel. 2megapixels is more than enough and will take pictures almost the size of a laptop screen. Pay attention to the lens. A quick (and dirty) judge of a lens is how much optical zoom it has. Don't swear by that, but it's a good measure. Also, a wide lens makes a big difference and isn't usually found on the lower end cameras. If you are always using auto, then that's about all you need to worry about. Of course you will play with the camera settings and over time improve your photos, and you may want to upgrade, but for now that panasonic is more than adequate.
If you are going to consider other cameras, keep in mind the lens quality and forget megapixels. My favorite brand is panasonic because, like someone else said, they have the Leica lens which is great. Canon is a well-respected brand, considered the best by many. |

Actually, its not wrong. It's basically true. It's important to look at what the OP wants a camera for. From what he's written I'm assuming that he wants a smallish camera that he can take with him nights out and for basic usage. (He'll be using it on auto).
If you shoot on Auto then you'll be using base ISO (MAYBE ISO100). Most normal cameras are the same at ISO 100. It doesn't matter if it's a scneider lens, a lecia lens or a canon lens. This is especially true if you're looking at spending in the 300,000 - 400,000 area. BUT some have additional features that other might not have; contrast detection, face detection, histograms, exposure, bracketing, HD movies, high resolution screen etc etc
I'd recommend the buyer goes to the camera mall at Yongsan and see what 'feels good in his hand' and what he feels comfortable with.
I think that the OP would want to spend a maximium of 400,000, wants something compact (like the Sony), maybe a zoom of 28-85mm, and maybe something that records HD movies.
Look at older models, maybe from 2 or 3 years ago. Look for the Canon IXUS 100. It's a tiny camera, 10mp and does HD movies (although the zoom is a bit short).
That would be my pick of the bunch. Oh, and if you're getting one with to record HD movies, grab yourself a 4GB card.
But a wide-angle lens, as mentioned by Auslegung is a nice addition.
If all you wanna do is take images of friends and upload them on facebook, then most will offer the same image quality.
If you'd like something more advanced and more options, well that's a different story and a different price category! I have a Canon G10 that I'm willing to sell for 350,000 with 2 batteries and a 4GB card if you're interested!!!! |
