|

This is a poll for F-2's and F-5's (foreigners married to Koreans). I'm curious about how many of you work in universities or elsewhere. Although I love my university job, I am not sure how long they plan to keep us going with no term limits, for example. I'm wondering what else F-2's are doing? I have come to the conclusion that being let go from a university might not be the worst thing for my financial future, given what I can make hourly elsewhere. I'd have to work harder for that money, though.
F-2's and F-5's, please take the poll. Others, please don't... just view results. Thanks! |

I now do only free-lance, but have only been doing that for a little over a year. The first 10 years in Korea I worked in 4 different universities and did some freelance work during breaks. I make much more now, but you are right; I have to work harder for the money. Having said that, I have to say that I am much more satisfied with what I am doing now. Less BS to put up with and I actually feel like a teacher again. |

Interesting so far. Sorry about leaving International School out. Knew I'd leave something out! It's a big list. |

Public school for 3 more days. Was doing side jobs but the school nixed that which has contributed to my decision not to renew. I got my F-2 part way through this contract and I'm looking forward to trying freelance/part time/side jobs work exclusively once I'm finished. |

All these fresh F2s that are appearing are starting to squeeze the market.
I have had an F2 for quite a few years and never before have I seen the way things are changing.
I hear people keep saying they are going to make a killing on side jobs but I feel these days are coming to an end. You will still probably do better than a hagwon but I have seen hourly rates regress from a minimum of 50K to a maximum of 50K (some schmucks are taking 30K) for the same work over a period 5 years. Of course there are still one-offs and short term gigs to be found but nothing like the old days.
The days where an F2 makes very good money are coming to an end I feel. All about supply and demand and supply of new F2s is certainly outstripping new demand for them. |

I'm finding just the opposite (but I don't go for big company classes).
What's happened is that lots of recruiters have started coming in and acting like middlemen. Some F-2's I know of are cutting out the middleman, now, though. There are far more jobs out there, but a lot of hopeful recruiters trying to suck as much out of the deal as possible.
Just a note- whatever the recruiter for a company job is paying you, he/she is making about that much on top of what you're getting paid. |

Seeing a lot of "own your own business/school".
Would love to hear from some of these people. What are you into? |

That is another factor as well. I have found that a few of the middlemen have been caught out though.
However with more F2s coming into the market people will take jobs for less and less money as they are not aware of their market value. They just think 30K is great when they can push for much more but are ignorant to he fact bringing the price down for everyone.[/quote] |

I think much depends on vacation time. If you can find a job (such as a university) where they will give you a full-time salary plus lots of free time than that is the best way to go. Otherwise, I would have to think just free-lance teaching is the most lucrative. And, even if it is a little less, just having the peace of mind of being your own boss might tip it in your favor.
These days I have heard some stories of people who start their own hakwons inside their homes (don't know the legality of it all - I've just heard the stories) by people whose wives are legal, registered tutors. Some of these people make a lot of money and create a lot of other opportunities. |

Absolutely.
They're in the process of driving the market into the dirt, without even realizing it. When you talk to people about it though, and mention the pay scales, they think you're lying.
Here's the deal, whatever the recruiter is paying, is probably no more than 50% of what the client it paying them. So all these 50k an hour jobs people take, the recruiter is usually making the same 50k an hour, if not more, for doing pretty much nothing except finding the job.
Cutting out the middleman has become increasingly harder to do as well, as there are a lot of &%^$ups who just don't know how to "play the game".
I'm not going to educate the competition myself, but they should at least know that if Mr. and Mrs. Lee will pay Joe Backpacker 50k an hour to teach Min Su the ABCs, that ANY other part time work teaching groups of Koreans, regardless of age, are worth MUCH more than the crappy 30-50k the sleazy Korean middlemen are offering them.
It's also a distinct part of Korean culture (the middleman-buffer), and although I'm not going to say it's racist, Koreans would much rather deal with another Korean directly, than a foreigner, any day of the week.
But yeah, a lot of people who don't know any better, have been driving the market down (and making the middlemen rich), for at least the last 5 years now. |
