Has anyone gotten an MA here?
I'm wondering if it's possible at one of the unis here in Seoul or Gyonggi.
How much? Is it possible on a public school schedule? |

So, what is your experience with Birmingham and why don't you want us to believe you? |

I did mine with the Unversity of Reading in Reading, England. Great program and support with the option of doing any part of the program on campus while the rest can be via distance/online.

Late marks having been told that I had received them. The Korean contact had gone on holiday with the results on his computer.
A tutor who, when listened to, managed to secure me lowest mark out of six papers. I didn't listen to him for the next one and secured my highest mark out of six papers.
A supervisor who started a long way into my dissertation who should have been there from day one of the six month period and was then away for 33% of my remaining allocated time.
Contradictory comments about layout from the same marker on 2 different papers.
Contradictory comments from the administration and markers.
Being refused secondary feedback from a marker who found several syntax errors in a paper but then wouldn't care to tell me where.
7,000 pounds? Six papers and a dissertation? That's expensive.
Having a tutor who left in my first module when I was trying to get started and was finding it all quite confusing. No communication for a while which was a difficult time to be going it alone.
There seemed to be no continuity or consistency throughout the whole period, from anyone.
Generally not happy with the whole program, but, I do know others who have done it with no problems. From my personal experience, I would not recommend them on any level. |

Great post. I believe you. It could be the Korean connection here as I've heard only positive testimonials from the Japanese Birmingham branch in Hiroshima at David English House. From my emails to the Seoul branch, I'm not optimistic. Very slow response time. It almost felt like he had "found" my email in the backlog. |

Observe- Wow, way to hijack a thread. You seem to have a personal agenda.
to the OP- Sookmyoung offers a evening/weekend MA in Teaching English. Of course, I'd need more info about what you're really wanting. |

Naturally with every course people have good and bad experiences. No course is perfect, some students want to be spoon feed, some students want more freedom or are more independent. One of my professors told me that a student asked him 'how many books am I supposed to read?' while doing his dissertation. You have to find a course with more good reviews than bad reviews. Also you have to go with a course that suits your needs, your schedule, workload etc.
Can you go to that university during the vacation and reduce the time spent on the course, do professors come to Korea, is there a centre in Korea, do the words 'online learning' not appear on your MA degree scroll..etc. In the Uni. of Birmingham it doesn't. The price is around the same for most universities and besides you get what you pay for. In reality you are paying for the name and the experience.
Uni. of Birmingham is ranked 66 in the world
http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/2009/results
The IOE is on this list too (only English unis)
http://www.4icu.org/gb/
But lists don't mean much as long as the course caters for what you want. |

Would this have any value outside of Korea? Something to think about for the future . . .

I have no idea. That's up to the confidence you gain from the education you get, and the hiring committee across the table from you. I'm just trying to answer the OP's question.
I got my MA from U. of Birmingham UK, and despite what 1 poster has said on here, would put money on the fact that most people are satisfied (or more than satisfied) with the program. There are roughly 100 people in Korea doing the program at any given time, so they must be doing something right. Of course, if they are doing something wrong, it should be known as well. |

Aside from British universities you might also look into universities located in Australia. These provide high-quality coursework and research based MAs in Applied Linguistics and Education at a reasonable cost. I did my MA in Applied Linguistics at the University of New England and am happy with the education I received. I then went on to Macquarie University for further training in linguistics. MQ has a better known linguistics department than UNE, though I found the quality at both institutions exceptionally good.
