I'll agree that much of this is getting out of hand....most cops are just plain idiots. But I can also see the other side...what's this guy doing taking pics of children on Santa�s lap, who are not his children?! If he taking the pics for a newspaper story, ok.
You folks teaching youngsters....man oh man....something seemingly innocent happens�you are now branded a pedophilia!

I'm not at all surprised at this, probably because I've had similar incidents too in even more ridiculous situations (ie. someone threatening to call the cops because I was taking photos of scenery from a sidewalk, and the time when security at my own university kicked me off campus for photography).

For some reason, many people in charge of policing and security think that photography is illegal.

This guy is a douche. He was taking pictures of people's kids without parental permission, then antagonizes the police by taking their picture. And then has the nerve to act all morally outraged. What a dumbass.

It's not such a big deal. It was in a shopping mall. There's lots of things you can't do in shopping malls, which are private property. It would be nice if it were considered a public place, like a street, but it's not.

The whole matter could have been handled better, but that's the way it is sometimes.

If you want to take a picture of a Santa ringing a bell on a street corner, shoot away.

Too many idiots.
The guy taking pictures was an idiot for not asking.
The police were idiots for overreacting and abusing power
The guy was an idiot for photographing the 5-0.
Here's my advice. Don't be an idiot. Whether they are power hungry or not you won't have problems with the coppers unless you are acting foolishly. Yes, both sides were idiots in this case - nothing really newsworthy here

Yes, Norman Rockwell used models from his community to carefully stage the scenes which he painted. And someone doing the same thing today would apparently be condemned as a danger to child safety. One insinuating accusation is all it would take and they'd have him in cuffs, downtown, confiscate all those photos of children and smear his name irreparably.
