Hey all! Just looking to see if anyone is familiar with or have any experience with public schools in Changwon. Specifically Bokseong and Hapseong? Any info would be appreciated, thanks! |

Well having Changwon kids right at this moment.
I can qualify that their English levels are middling. |

I guess that's better than it being non-existent right? Do you enjoy working in Changwon? I realize that this is pretty objective but how are your co-teachers, Administrators, etc.? |

Changwon's one of the better cities in Korea to live in. It's a planned city so a lot more spread out then traditional/older Korean city. I don't mean the city is a lot bigger, I mean there are a lot more parks and sidewalks which tend to be missing in many other cities/towns except down town areas. Most Korean towns/cities are quite cluttered and jammed in.
I've lived here over 8 years and there are a lot of long term foreigners here. People who have been here 5 or more years. That has to say something about the place.
Here's some info on Changwon:
http://wiki.galbijim.com/Changwon
And do a search on facebook for Changwon as there are a few groups and search for O'Briens or O'Briens Bar which is one of the two main foreigner bars in Changwon. Just go in and feel free to start asking people some questions. |

Awesome BigBuds, thanks! If all goes well, I will be moving there in April so I've been doing tons of reading about the city and researching here on Dave's but figured it didn't hurt to get some more opinions. I will definitely be checking out the facebook groups as well |

What about Masan as compared to Changwon? Which is better? |

I would say that Changwon is better than Masan in pretty much every regard. More foreigners, more shopping, more parks, more hiking... and if none of those do it for you, it's at least cleaner.
Changwon is a good city. |

I have only moved to Changwon about 6 months ago (have been in Korea about 15 years) but it certainly is the nicest place by far I have lived in, in Korea.
I would recommend it but don't expect too much action. The foreigner bars are actually good fun and there are things to do but if you like to party Changwon isn't the place.
Masan is terrible....it is a port city by every definition. Congested, dirty, old and provincial. It is probably the top 5 worst cities I have ever been to in Korea and it isn't going to change soon as the city council is bankrupt. What makes it worse is Changwon is right next door so the comparison is even more exaggerated |

I vote Masan, but it's a personal thing. Hard to judge one over the other, though I've lived in both for over a year each. I don't like how spread out Changwon is and how it seemed like it took forever to go somewhere. Masan has 3 different 'downtown' areas so you'll most likely always be close to something that you want. |

Good point...I live in Paly-yong-dong and it is a long way for me to get into downtown Changwon (homeplus is close though). Hapseongdong in Masan is closer. However I love riding bikes (the pedal kind) and Changwon is well set-up for that so it dossn't take too long to get into town with pedal power.
What could you ever want in masan anyway?? |

You didn't happen to do the Santa Bike Parade in Changwon yesterday, did you? One of the best cycling events I've done.
Changwon is really set up well for cycling. They've done a lot in the past year to advocate cycling and I think they've done a great job.
Still prefer Masan, though. In 2 km I'm out of the city and riding along the coast towards Jindong, etc. Beautiful. Also less than 2 km away from some serious trail riding on the mountains. A bit harder to get out of Changwon to ride from where I lived in Sangnamdong. |

Changwon's not spread out compared to cities back home. I can drive my car or ride my motorbike from one side of Changwon to the other in 20 to 25 minutes and that's taking it easy. And no, I'm not talking width wise.
Where I'm from back home it takes hours to drive from one side of the city to the other. And the traffic is worse here in Korea. |

Yes but you make Changwon sound as if it is huge when it is not. I was just giving some perspective. |
