So, last night I'm out for drinks with two friends. One guy (a Canadian) is going on about how he wants a woman, but in the end, we can't convince him to go out and find one... mostly, he just wants to complain about it. So in an attempt to prove it's okay to walk up to a random girl, I go and try to talk to the waitress... she doesn't speak any English, so I go back to my table, no harm.

My Korean friend flags her down to sit with us for a minute and starts speaking to her... after a few minutes, she gets up to go back to work and he tells us about her... turns out she's in her last year of high school. Shocked I hope word doesn't get around that the American is looking for young girls... that can't be good.

On another topic...

After the three of us left the bar, we ran into a group of foreigners that were sitting at a table on the street drinking... after a few minutes of talking with them, a group of Korean girls walks by and all the foreigner guys start hootin' and hollerin'... it made me absolutely embarrassed to be a foreigner. No wonder Koreans have bad impressions of foreigners when these are the actions that they do in public. I had a very uncertain opinion of alot of the people here, because I thought they were too idealistic... now I just have a very low opinion of them. That type of behavior is completely inexcusable... it truly bothers me that those women would have to see these foreign guys being that rude and now they will likely infer that all foreigners are sexist pigs.

I really can't even express how ashamed it made me feel... admittedly, none of the other foreigners are from America, but it's not like those girls cared at that point.

I've made it a very strict point to avoid the two predominant foreigner bars in Icheon, now that I know what they are... but now I feel ashamed just walking down the street because of that incident.

Once again, I agree with you. I know how you feel as the same thing happens around the area I live in on a nightly basis. Thus, I tend to keep to myself and disassociatate from the "mob" who cause hell.

Nevertheless, Koreans don't seem to have the open mind we do therefore most unfortunately paint us all with the same color brush.

Oh sorry, is that okay?

Ryless, I know mate, seen it myself plenty, I actually punched a guy out for acting like that once. But I think you should give people a bit more credit, as in the passers-by, to separate you from them.

There are Korean people among those that saw them of course who will say "I saw a bunch of really rude foreigners today, all foreigners are like that." (Ring any bells anyone? Laughing ) But the vast majority are intelligent people, and are able to judge a situation without making such generalizations.

I certainly hope so... frankly, if I had been a little more sober, I would have gone looking for a fight (I took the lesson to heart, never fight when drunk).

I guess I think it's easier to see all the negatives that foreigners bring as more important than all of the good that some foreigners can do. Either way, I'll still do my best to give the Koreans I meet a good impression of Americans... respectful and what not.

Good for you. It doesn't take much though despite these jerks, I think most people know that jerks are jerks wherever they are from.

im still skocked that people, and when I say people I mean alot of foreigners who live here in korea are still paying to get into limelight in itaewon. I stopped going to itaewon months ago because, well it bothers me now, but that's a different topic. I dont understand how paying 10,000 at the door then paying 6000 per drink all night can add up to any money savings. 10000 won is about $13 canadian, if a bar charged that in halifax to get in, they would be bankrupt in a week, and $8 for a beer made in korea is just rediculous. the mafia is making a killing at that bar since they took it over. i heard the cover at the door is going up to 15000 soon.

Yeah, Limelight is super-expensive!

But what I can't figure out is why women love to go the most expensive place they can possibly find? If a lot of women didn't go to Limelight and have it be choice #1 for them, then I'd see no reason to go whatsoever.

Which takes me to my next point. Went out to meet a girl recently and she brought me to some place that a beer is 8,000 won a bottle just sitting at some table (nothing special about the place). Why do women like those kinds of places SO much?

I can't believe you think that's expensive, I'm genuinely shocked by your post Shocked , where I come from (UK) you'll spend the evening in the street if you try to avoid paying more than a 5 pounds (around 10,000 won) entrance fee. It'll only make a killing while its popular, until some other hot new club opens up. The clubs have a pretty short shelf life.

u can be shocked all u want, but bars in halifax would be out of business if they were that expensive because people wouldnt go there, it would be dead. dont think limelight is gonna die very soon, especailly since no new bars are opening in that area.

Don't be ashamed mate.

My first year here my roomie and I went to a bar. Yes a BAR. Now legally the people working there should be of age. My friend talks with the waitress and asks how old she is etc. Turns out she's in high school and her parents own the bar - reason she's working there.

There was no embarassment on our part. We thought it was funny. The girl was hot, but aren't most young girls hot looking? We finished our beers and left.

About 7yrs ago before IMF most beer was 5-10k a bottle depending what you were drinking (imports).

I used to pay 8k per bottle of Corona as that was the price at most bars. Thank God the prices have dropped to reasonable levels.

Tiger, it's cheaper to pay a hooker 60,000 won and get your poon. Chicks that suck up your cash with drinks, usually won't show ya the "money" on the first couple dates...if they do at all.
