Some of these recruiters are ridiculous. OP, does this recruiter have a registration number? If he is a legal recruiter, he has a registration number. If not, he can't sue or even legally recruit teachers.

Thought I would post my recent conversation with Mr. Park and see if everyone else finds this as suspicous as I do.

13:18 woonkyu: Hi Trey

Ich: Hello Steve
woonkyu: How are you doing?

Ich: I'm alright
Sorry for not replying to you yet
I've been a little busy moving around a lot
I was about to get back to writing you
How have you been?

13:19 woonkyu: I am ok.
As you know, I am in trouble fro Bucheon school.

13:20 Ich: If the school is really charging you a penalty, have them contact me directly and I will deal with it.

woonkyu: Not diretly with school.
Other agency.

13:21 Ich: Then have them contact me.

woonkyu: I have connacted with other agency
So they claimed me

Ich: First you told me it was the government charging the penalty.

woonkyu: The agency told me
13:22 But I already complained agency but they told me there is no way to do withou any penalty

Ich: Well then please have them contact me directly.
13:23 woonkyu: I already remitted 6000,000won last friday
It is Korean style,

Ich: Then they can tell me that as well

13:24 woonkyu: Yes I can make them call you now

Ich: what is the name of this agency?

13:25 woonkyu: ETS
I think It is not big
But a little small one.
13:26 Tell me youe phone number
Then I can make them call you now.

Ich: just a moment
13:29 i don't have access to a phone at the moment
have them email me and i will be able to call them later
13:33 also if it was so important for this class to start at a certain time
why did the start date change every time i talked to you?

13:36 woonkyu: Sorry i was out
Ok I will le tknow the email address
13:37 and starting date change come from current techer changed. So they have to change

13:45 Ich: alright
well i will wait to hear from them
and we will talk more later
have a good day

woonkyu: Email them via [email protected]
13:50 woonkyu: The owner name is Tony(Sung Ho) Choi
13:52 Send it by today and remit USD750 by today otherwise I have to take action and Can not wait anymore

Ich: I have no way to send you money from here
13:53 My bank in the states won't let me do international wire transfers over the phone
and i'm sorry that i'm a little suspicious of the truthfulness of all these claims
13:54 before i left for korean i was contacted by a man claiming to represent the owner of this program i was going to work for
*before i left for taiwan
13:55 and his name and the name of the man he represented don't match the one you just gave me

woonkyu: Yes
The Person is same one.
I do not know the name you called in Korea.

13:56 Ich: i didn't call him
he called me
and when i told him your name, he didn't know who you were

woonkyu: I can make sure who called you at that time.
Because I contacted you to make contract.
13:57 Then, How can I sent contract.
14:00 Maybe we were using Korean name
Not Steve...
14:01 Korean Woon-Kyu Park

Ich: I told him both Steve Park and 바운규

woonkyu: How can I sent the contract?
14:02 Then do you think I made fake contract?

Ich: i don't know

woonkyu: They complained a lots

Ich: but nothing was official

woonkyu: I lost my creitds in this area.
14:03 Anyway
YOu can not remit the penalty
Pls tell me you can or not

Ich: i told you earlier
14:04 let them contact me directly and i will deal with them

woonkyu: I informed email address
14:05 Deal now and let me knwo by today.
14:06 I do not want to argue with you anymore
Finish it by today
14:07 Tomorrow I will do something to recovery my lost credits
That is my final comments
Franklly I recommanded you very storngly

Ich: one last question
what is your recruiter registration number?

14:08 woonkyu: When you remit then I will send the scanning.
14:09 I am clear for registeration.
I can issue the receipt right away.

Ich: if you can't give me the number, then how do I know you're even an actual licensed recruiter in korea?

14:10 woonkyu: I can send scanning rigt after renmitting

14:11 Ich: after me sending you money?

woonkyu: Your position is not make sure legal or illegal?

Ich: i think in this situation, that it is a fair and legitimate concern

woonkyu: If I am illegal, then you can sue again in Korea
14:12 Because I am legal, I am trying to sue you

Ich: you could just be trying to scare me into giving you money

woonkyu: If I am illegal, I can sue you in Korea.
14:13 Never..

Ich: but you haven't sued me yet

14:14 woonkyu: I am owner. How can I just scare you for very small money.?

Ich: all you have done so far is threatened me and told me to send you money
your angry about not getting your recruiting fee
and are now trying to make me pay it to you

woonkyu: Ok The thinking is your side.
14:15 I just want you to know. I do not want to argue like this.
14:17 I can not make you change your thinking.
But keep in mind.
14:19 I just want to take my damage back to you. So I have to spread your attitudes world wide via internet under true comments.

I know it's a bit long. But I think it proves more or less that this guy is a con-artist. let me know what you think.

That scam makes Nigerian scams look like a well-orchestrated heist from the Italian Job. It's pretty obvious this guy doesn't have a leg to stand on, and he's simply trying to extort money from the clueless foreigner in any way he can.

I like the "I sent 600,000 already. Give me 750 dollars" part. I hope he's not expecting people to not know that 600k is only about $500.

first off you never have to pay a recruiter anything.
and second there is no legal recourse for them. especially
in Taiwan. Enjoy your vacation. and by all means dont send this
turd a thing.

One question though. You were going to work for an elementary school in Bucheon?

Laughing

This recruiter's a wanker. I'm not sure if you can attach little notes to electronic transfers here like you can at home, but if you can send him 10 won and a note telling him to 'f*** off'.

You have your documents, I don't see why you're even talking to him anymore. He'd be better off finding someone who has never set foot in the country before to try and scam.

@thomas pars

Yeah, it was going to be an after school program at an elementary school.

I'm still going back to Korea briefly, but this jerk won't be getting a won or another word out of me. I talked to another recruiter that I know and her advice was for me to sue him. I'm at least going to report him to the Ministry of Education.

i had an issue with an afterschool program years ago. basically they're all cheating ba*tards, imo. they take around 50 percent of profits for themselves. anyway. my guy threatened me with a lawsuit and then being reported to immigration. i soon after got a call from 'immigration'. i got the gf to look up the number and it turns out it was an office in gangnam. needless to say i laughed off the rest of their threats. you should do the same

Yeah he emailed me a couple more times saying that he doesn't have a problem with me but that we have a few minor issues to resolve. I just ignored him and then blocked his email address. I'm now settling into a nice new life in Taiwan.

I would guess that you are pretty luck this is the first time to deal with such a lowlife recruiter. Being on your 3rd renewal I would have expected something like this to have happened already.

Laugh and ignore (as I see you already did). If you really want to have fun threaten a countersuit with the American government at your back and really blow the smoke up their posterior. See who can have fun making the longer and more technical BS email threats.

Sad thing is that tactics like this probably work on a larger number of people than we think. Yay recruiters. Like any other turn and burn service, there are the good and there are the really really bad.

I broke a contract in the initial phases also, had the same kind of reaction. I felt quite guilty about backing out on them until they started tactics like this. From that point I was Very happy I did not take that job. Very Happy.

or, mess with him, tell him you really want to keep your options open in korea and taiwan and you will be sending the money asap. ask him for his bank account info.

or tell him you will take the job and ask him to fax the contract. pull his strings, like make minor changes and fax it back for his agreement (unsigned) like change the start time to 3:00 from 2:45 and tell him you eat a late lunch. ask him to get approval for the change and send it back to you. continue...

No no, get his bank details, but then say there is an administration charge which you dont think youre liable to pay, but if he wants his whatever it is, he just needs to send you whatever it is all those nigerian scam emails ask for.

You should definitely do this, because (aside the whole fraud thing), it would be hysterically funny! Smile Actually you could maybe do this for a living. Find shady recruiters and play off their greed by putting their settlement just out of reach with an endless string of administration hoops and charges they need to jump through!
