Hey guys, I'm entering basic training tomorrow. This will be my last post in a while. It's been fun arguing with you people but now I'm off to protect this country you guys hate and love so much.

In case you're interested, I will try to blog about my conscription experience when the opportunity presents itself. From what I know, there hasn't been a " Conscript K-blog" yet.

Will your Korean stand out or do you speak like a native? Hope you don't have too many problems. A blog would be interesting.

I'm praying to whatever's out there that I won't. hopefully I'll be on leave then or maybe my CO will happen to be a big boxing fan and let us watch. At the very least I'm gonna download when I can!

It's one of things I'm worried about. I can speak fluently but I have an accent. I wonder if I'll get more crap or less because of my foreign influence.

Thanks. I'll still be ranting on Dave's on my freetime if I can. I'm not sure what you mean by internet girlfriend.

I actually think the conscientious objectors who opt to go to prison instead are much more braver than I can ever be.

I'm sorry that you have to go through this: I think military service should be a choice in any society that truly wants to be free. I don't want to hijack this thread though so I'll digress and just say this: a blog about military service in Korea would be very entertaining. If you make it, you'll have at least one regular reader.

You could have made the easy choice of not coming to Korea but you are a man my son. No doubt about it - whatever my views are on South Koreas ability to defend itself against the north without US backing is irrelevant. You are a man and you are going to have experiences that will stay with you for a lifetime. Good luck! And total respect!

I agree dude. I don't think a free country that values liberty should force its young men to serve on the whims of the government, but what can you do. I'll definitely try to write about the experience as soon as I am able, but that's gonna take a while since I'm not sure when I'll be able to access a computer.

I have a different view on this whole thing; people who refuse to go for their beliefs are more courageous in my eyes. But thanks anyway. I do think most soldiers are also deserving of a special kind of respect reserved only for warriors and I hope to be among them. I got your pm and I got respect for men of the British armed forces. You guys have a history of badass soldiers.

Bring honor and grace to your country. There is no shame in service but the service itself, so make your service the best that you can. Godspeed.

Dunno. Just heard it was the done thing during conscription. Anyway, thumbs on the blog. I'd be interested to read it.
