Greetings,

I doubt it's original but I've been tossing around an idea to liven up the usual cooking session for my elementary winter camp. I've had great success with a cooking day in the past and the kids really enjoyed it. I'd like to get their creativity flowing this time instead of introducing something to them. I don't have a solid plan yet, I just wanted to bounce some ideas around and see if anyone has good things to add or tell me if this is a terrible, too difficult idea altogether.

The level: 15-20 5th and 6th grade elementary students. I'l have the "high level" students and these are all good, hardworking kids.

The idea: Groups of 3-4 students. Each group will have to plan, prepare and make a dish of their choosing. They'll be given a small amount of money and (with the chaperoning help of a K-teacher or two) taken to a very close grocery store to do their shopping.

Each group will give a short presentation of their food, what they used, how they made it, etc. Everyone will get to taste the food and at the end we'll have a taste test competition (possibly multiple categories) for the best dish.

That's the basic idea. Any advice or recommendations would be much appreciated. Or, just call me crazy for making my job more difficult. Wink

The Oxford Picture Dictionary has a really nice section on foods and verbs needed to describe the cooking process. Side by Side also has a nice recipe section.
