Hi looking at starting my first contract for teaching in Korea, so excited! I've been trying to find a school in Gangnam and so far got 2 job offers. One was for a wonderland school which I found out has a bad reputation and was wondering if anyone has heard about Jasmil EWAS?

Based on what I've heard, which admittedly isn't that much, could be hit or miss. I know of one person who wanted to quit in the middle of his contract (but didn't), and another who got a sweet deal for re-signing after what was overall a good year. Jamsil seems a nice area to live, too. See if the recruiter can put you in touch with anyone working there.

Some Wonderlands are bad - not all though.

The best thing to do is to talk with current and past teachers. If they don't let you, move on. It really is that easy.

And don't rely on your recruiter for accurate information - even about pay. They have every incentive to lie to you.

I just interviewed with the manager/director. It seems like a nice place. When would you guys start?

I was just offered as well.

Director was extremely honest. Sounds professional ...yet laid back? Jamsil rules, I can vouch for that. I have an email out to one of the other teachers right now, waiting to see what he says.

Anybody offered a salary number yet?

just curious...for all the people who got offers, did you all have teaching experience? BA in Education? And what nationality are you all?

I have a year of tutoring grades 1-6, BA in corporate finance, TESOL 100+ hour, and did college in 3 years. I think I'm still bottom of the rung, haha.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that this was after I was already accepted for the position.

Hey, everybody. Update:

I dug through the forums here and found a ton of complaints about EWAS. I also emailed a foreign teacher there named "Branden" and didn't get a response yet. I emailed a recruiter and told her to ask the school a few more questions because I wasn't quite clear on a few things and that I'd also like to see a contract. Maybe 20 minutes later I got an email from the recruiter saying:

"Hi Andrew,

It's bad news, the school, after consideration, they've decided not to proceed with you."

Looks like I caught them. Welp, I won't be taking the contract for obvious reasons, but take this information how you like.

Cheers

Helen, the owner, is a control freak. I worked for her on a part-time basis @ 40k per hour and she would not get out of my face the entire time. She yelled at me in front of my students one day 'cause of a lie a kid told her about not doing his homework. I told her calmly: "I warned you three times so far to never raise your voice to me. You have no class, are a dim-witted shrew, and have poor ideas." I then told her that I quit. I walked out the door, but not before telling her that I wanted the 600k she owed me by that night at 6pm.

There was a very, very, very fat broad from Regina, Saskatchewan there who was an equally shrewish thing. Stay the heck away from there!

Oh yeah, you'd have to pick up the kids daily with the bus driver.

Figures.

I mentioned not getting paid for riding the kiddie bus to the recruiter. After she asked the school about it, they didn't want to "go forward with me" anymore.

Sounds lame, glad I skipped it.

The air there was thick with tension, and it was obvious to me that the expats were walking on egg shells. The dynamic duo of the effete Albertan and his, em, "female" morbidly obese partner-in-ass kissing sucked up to Helen Kim big time. There was a big guy with a goatee from Toronto who seemed cool and aware of the fact that Helen was not a nice lady. I'm pretty sure he had or has an account here at Dave's.

The Korean instructors were an unfriendly lot. You lucked out by not ending up in Jamshil E.W.A.S.

Brandon was a guy from Alberta who's step-brother played in the N.H.L. for the Rangers, or he was the seemingly cool guy with a goatee and shaved head from Toronto who used to post on here.

The quoted material above is inaccurate.

There are three sides to every story. The statements from dirving in this thread are but one of those sides.

The manager of the school is categorically not how driving has described her to be.

Any prospective employees of the school in question should consider the tone of dirving's posts and weigh heaviest the advice they get from the employees currently working there--not hearsay.
