Hey everyone. I was hoping to get a Blu-ray computer drive and an external enclosure to run with my notebook. Does anybody have any experience buying bare Blu-Ray drives or enclosures here? If so, how where would I find them and how much would they cost?

I did look on gmarket, but I couldn't really figure out what was going on with that site. Smile

Thanks,
tatertot

I bought one of the newer LG blu-ray drives. Works great, but you need to update it out of the box, or it won't play many discs. Do this directly from the site. Another note, the software comes with a somewhat intrusive blu-ray updater program that Windows 7 doesn't like. You can elect to search for updates manually, which is what I did.

I have the 08 model. It plays blu-ray, but doesn't record.

So they are more expensive here in Korea? Not that that surprises me, but I guess maybe I'll just buy them from newegg.com. Even with shipping, it should be significantly cheaper then. Thanks for the information.

I might be wrong, but I don't think USB 2.0 has the bandwidth to handle BluRay. You might encounter stuttering in your video.

Do you have an eSATA port in your laptop? An enclosure that supports eSATA would be better for the BluRay player.

Or maybe even Firewire.

I didn't even think of that, d'oh! I was planning on ripping the Blu-Rays onto the computer though. In that case, speed wouldn't be an issue. Of course, that would take a while.

Whoops, I forgot to answer your question. My laptop doesn't have eSata, but it does have firewire. I should look for a firewire enclosure then.

You'd better research that. Not sure what different levels of Firewire are available now, but I know USB 2.0 and firewire were darn near identical a few years ago. I agree... you may not be able to pull this off.
