OK .......they don't want criminals in here so we have to do the criminal background checks. They don't want people with diseases and or illegal drug problems so we take a blood and urine test. They want responsible teachers so we have to have at least a B.A.
All this and we are still viewed suspiciously...what else will it take? |

My take is that males will have to get it snipped before coming over and women will have to get them tied. We can't have the pollution of the pure blooded Korean genetic structure. |

I call BS/lame/pathetic on this response.
You don't see anything different in Itaewon on a Saturday night than you'll see in any big, popular area in other cities in this country, other than it's by foreigners.
So unless you're trying to offer evidence of racism, you're gonna need to find a new line of thought, my friend. |

I call shennanigans on your pathetic response, Itaewon is far and away an awful place to go and not because of any racist viewpoints. It's because American GI's stir up trouble and pick fights with English teachers and Koreans alike. Not to mention the other trash that finds it's way there. Incheon and Seoul are nothing like Itaewon. It reeks of fighting and lewd behavior, both of which I ashamed of. |

well, if it's American GIs than it shouldn't impact ESL teacher Visa requirements, should it?
I'm not sure what you mean by 'lewd' behaviour, but my first year in Korea I lived in a red light district. My second year I was in an officetel. The 10th floor? love motel. The 8th floor? Love motel. the woman who lived to my right? hooker. The woman who lived to my left? hooker. The bar on the 4th floor? Blow Job barber. The two bars in the building next door? Sit down bars. Three bars in the building beside that one? sit down bars.
Oh, then there were the fights that happened EVERY NIGHT. This was in a suburb of Seoul.
My current city, all kinds of sit down bars, love motels, hookers, fights, puking on the street. Every city I've been to in this country, along with the few smaller towns I've been in ALL had these same issues.
The only difference in the Itaewon example is that it's foreigners.
And it is the GIs as you claim, then, once again, that SHOULD NOT impact visa requirements for ESL teachers.
So the example that the guy offered is, as I said, BS. |

When in Korea.......
Now, I drink enough soju at night so I either puke on the street, piss on the street or puke on the street while I'm pissing.
It takes time to integrate yourself into Korean society.
Next, I will explore those barber pole places as I've been told they offer a great cut and blow dry....I'm sure that's what my friend said.
Don't worry about being the foreigner. Without us, Koreans would find a harder time justifying the immoral aspects of its culture. |

In the 19th century, American immigration law restricted Chinese coming in to only males, no sisters, mums or wives. It was from fear of "yellow peril."
Just saying.

I'd say soldiers are probably in the minority in Itaewon bars these days.
The latest gripes about English teachers is that we're "mercenaries," just here to make money, don't care about educating kids and cannot care as
much as Koreans can ... me, I never heard of any Koreans who went to America to make money, have you?

Big deal, so you have to piss in a cup once a year and get a jab in the arm They want responsible teachers so we have to have at least a B.A. again, seems reasonable

Yeah that part's funny, whereas hogwans aren't a business and purely have the kid's best interests at heart. Unfortunately ideas like the one you've mentioned are one of the reasons why things won't change for a long time with the English system here in Korea in my opinion.
Given the Korean love for all things materialistic, it's a strange thing to say.
And of course we come here for the money (as well as a different experience), I didn't come here for the pollution, wayward thoughts about foreigners, strange ideas (sometimes) and to get away from the beach and warm weather. |

Agreed.
You're having a laugh if you think Itaewon is such a terrible place. There are tons of nice little restaurants and bars behind the Hamilton.....I've never seen a fight in any of those places. I never see the Muslim community brawling around the Mosque. I have never seen any 'human trash' rolling around What the Book? or any of the myriad of foreign food stores. I see families with young kids in strollers wandering around Noksapyeong sipping Lattes and chatting with the Korean stall holders on the street.
Not saying that it's an earthly paradise, but it's far safer than many places I've been to in my life, and there are plenty of nice venues there.
I have never been witness to a fight in Itaewon - there are a ton of MPs and Korean police wandering around Itaewon-no at all hours keeping things in check. And as regards lewd behaviour.....open your eyes dude, there are brothels everywhere in Korea, Itaewon is no exception. |
