If you want to show your students a new movie or TV show that you haven't seen before, or if you are wondering whether or not something will be appropriate or not to watch at school, use that website.
Even innocent movies could have a scene you forgot about that isn't appropriate for the classroom. |

Shouldn't the teacher just watch it and make their own judgement? I'm puzzled?

Sometimes the teacher won't have the time to watch up at a 2 hour long movie; I approve. |

It's good, but many teachers just download a movie, and there's no telling what outside clips might be thrown in 15 minutes into it. |

I'm all for teacher's having a repetoire of "go to" lessons for those days when the going gets tough. But if you throw on a movie you haven't watched in full - you are approaching dereliction of duty.
But maybe we are talking about two different things. Teaching or overseeing students. If you are just dropping in on students and not responsible for their learning - by all means do the above.
My advice. Don't show anything you haven't watched yourself. Just like , "don't teach any words/vocabulary" you've never heard / know of ..... Keep it real. |

just thought i'd add that this website isn't just about movie ratings, but it also has a bunch of categories, like romantic comedies for tweens, etc. that'll give you suggestions if you're having a hard time finding something the kids would like. |

Yep...been there and done that. Years ago at a boys H.S> they convinced me to get Resident Evil 2.
The boys loved zombie boobies. my bad.
Of course I could have returned it that day, but I kept it (and showed it) for the week.

This looks like a great site. I've seen other parental rating websites that seemed condescending or underestimating of teens, but from what I've seen this one matches pretty precisely with my own impressions, and I like that you can search by themes and ages.
Thank you for the url!! |

My work computer won't let me see the link. What kind of nasty stuff do people consider showing their students?
(Then again, my work computer also won't allow me to look at Craigslist or the Globe and Mail newspaper from Toronto...) |

i actually just got caught out the other day.
Picked up notting hill for my almost 3rd grade JHS. I thought they were more than capable of handling it since its really just a love story, but then spike showed up in his underpants. So long as he didnt turn up doing stupid things too much i though, id get away with it. But then the whole going to bed thing happened. And its not even remotely bad, you see a shoulder in the dark as clothes fall off while they kiss, but it lasts a good minute or so, and half way through the students were telling me this was a "bad movie". I'm shouting, "no no, love love, kenchanaiyo!" Cue the next scene where spike opens the door to the press and i honestly wanted the ground to open up
Its notting hill! The trouble is, being the first time id let them see a movie i kinda forgot to look at it through their eyes until we were all watching it. I mean, i remembered the swearing, and i remember spike being a bit ridiculous, but i honestly forgot that to a 14/15 year old it might be a little too mature for them. Shame too, it seemed like the perfect movie to give them a little snippit of british life.
PS. Its a bit slow as well, and most of the subtle humour goes way over their head. And with spike being the only real comedy relief aside that, well, it wasnt entirely successful
Luckily i was going to have them watch the PG-13 rated "the invention of lying" which opens with this exchange:
"youre early! im sorry, i was busy masturbating"
"that makes me think of your vagina"
Lucky i checked that one. The rest of the movie (aside one bit quite far in) is fine, but that entire scene is utterly inappropriate. |

been there, done that. a movie i've seen countless times before and thought it would be fine/cute for my middle schoolers turned out to be a little more risky than i thought. of course they loved it, but i was secretly kicking myself. |

yeah, the trouble is you dont want to patronise them with something too fuzzy, so obviously you want something realistic to an extent and maybe with a careful and easy to explore adult theme. Hell, i even considered juno (im terrible if left to my own devices in truth), until my friend talked me out of it. Its hard to see things sometimes outside of your own barriers. Maybe the best test is really "if my students parents were all in this class watching this movie with the students, would they be calling for the principle to sack me after class?"
Sites like thsi are good because as much as you have common sense, its definitely nice to know just how much you see it through grown up and desensitized eyes. Its good to have that check on your own misplaced assumptions. Pity its also blocked on my school computer though |
