OP what is the exact point of this thread? For you to
A. Indirectly gloat about your money?
B. Make nOObs wish for something they won't soon get?
C. Troll for an arguement of not so epic proportions?
D. Drive your figurative sports car around Dave's because your male member is too small?
E. All of the above. |
Actually none of the above. I see so many people whining on this
board about how crappy life and work conditions are. Then I see
things like Atek and a teachers union. But I never really see any
people being pro-active about making Korea work for them. Most
people here seem to indolent, ignorant and all together incapable of
taking the bull by the horns and kicking it in the nuts. But then oh no,
you might get hurt. If you will also notice I made no reference to my
earnings nor did I troll. I simply made an observation and asked some
questions. |

I stopped making money for Koreans a long time ago and moved to freelance work. At 30 hours per week and 50,000KRW/hour I would be pulling 6,000,000KRW/month. That would be sweet. |

Interesting article about salaries in Korea:
http://english.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2009/12/16/2009121600473.html
Average Korean salary is 2.04 million won while well paying jobs were between 6 and 10 million a month. So it seems like an English teachers in Korea is earing 1/4 of the average salary of a Korean accountant. (Ignoring their taxes more or less since I have no idea how much they have to pay) |

A little clarification, please. (yes, I know I'm being obtuse, but...) Exactly what kind of "dollar" are you referring to, OP?
I only ask because I'm Kiwi, so $1 for me works out to 60 or so cents US. I worked out this week my salary is around $33 NZ per hour, which I'm happy with, but it's still only 50cents NZ a minute. Using US dollars, that would be 30 cents a minute, which just makes me feel unloved |

I did not read anything in your original post where you mentioned how someone goes about doing this. So by just saying why aren't you, you are ridiculing thousands of teachers that probably don't know how to take the proverbial bull by the horns. It is mildly offensive to come on here and just rip people for being ignorant who mainly aren't by choice. As a fellow first year I had no idea what to do, next year will definitely be different I can assure you of that. It's just yet another post on Dave's that makes me hate this site. Some person who has been here for awhile looking down their nose at new people and saying WHY?! When instead they should be helping, because I am positive that is what you would have wanted when you were here. And before I finish please note I am not looking for hand holding, just constructive advice. I like many other teachers here are growing tired Dave's for this very reason. |

You CAN make 1000 won a minute if:
you work all privates (lots of transit time unless you get lucky, not to mention illegal and hard to remit)
you have wife/gyopo visa
you're an exec for a multinational
that's about it folks |

hakwon teachers are making around 15 dollars an hour..
do the math...
if that is great money for college grads where you live then good for you..
where I come from minimum wage is 12 dollars an hour!
that means if you are some bum who washes dishes in a restaurant you make 12 bucks an hour!
hakwon teaching in Korea is NOT SWEET MONEY!!
you are all being exploited by your bosses..
and dont talk to me about free flights or housing...
the flights are for their advantage to get you here!
and the house costs them 400 bucks a month!
plenty of rooms to rent major cities for 100 bucks a week..
Im sorry but when I hear 2.2 million won is great money.. I always think.. DAMN!! is that all you guys are worth.. 500 bucks a week!!!
chit I made more than that flipping pizzas back in Uni...

And once again  a lot of talking about how crappy some have it without any help. Thanks once again frequent posters on Dave's......
People come here because they don't have a great job back home and is the money anything spectacular NO. But I am still able to save money. Instead of criticizing and whinning constantly lets be productive and maybe, just maybe help the rookies out.......
But no, people will flame me because I am standing up for the little guy and this site is mainly just old heads bloviating about how good they have it and how ignorant and stupid the newbies are......
I love/hate Dave's Esl...... |

My uni isn't at the top of the pay scale but the pay still works out at 1,967won minute for class time. Which is I guess about $1.71 a minute. Unfortunately I don't work as many 'minutes' as I'd like at this pay rate.
Now, if they'd let me work, say, 20 hours a week for, say, 45 weeks a year at that rate I wouldn't be so poor.
Double my my hours, double my salary and half my vacation time please =) |

If your only goal in life is to make as much money as possible why are you teaching English in Asia? If you can not live a comfortable lifestyle here in Korea then something is seriously wrong. I have been at a public school for 2 years, teach for 10-20 minutes about 20 times a week, eat out all the time, drink good liquor, vacation in SE Asia, and have saved thousands of dollars. I don't care what my hourly salary breaks down to, because I am satisfied with my standard of living here. I could be back home right now making a dollar a minute, working 100 hours a week, and completely stressed but I prefer the lifestyle working here affords me. If you are so obsessed with the dollar signs that you can't think about quality of life something is seriously wrong. |

Haha me too. However, I believe I average out at about 40K US per year with the little incentive duties and extra classes the uni offers, plus have PLENTY of free time and vacations...and a free apartment. It's not too bad |

I'm guessing this troll is leading us to his sales pitch.
I think it's the same guy who's posting on craigslist selling his "getting easy privates" method for 500,000 won. |

Where have you been living that you get such a sweet rate as that? I have, in the 6 years I've lived away from home, never paid anything like that. The cheapest place I lived in was 150 a week. London prices, for something half way decent, are twice that a week (200+). |
