My international school uses GradeQuick which I personally think is a piece of crap. Back in Canada I used MarkBook which is a much better program.

For doing grades when I worked at a Korean school we had to log into the government's website and input them that way. IMO it was the worst way to implement, but they wanted to set up a system that prevented certain types of cheating. Exams were scanned and automatically uploaded to the government site, so you could only change things during a grace period and the government would audit the results. I am glad I don't have to deal with that crap anymore.

Are you talking about classroom/grade management or course/school management software?

Big difference between the two.

Here's a list of course/school management software:

Also check out dimdim. An interesting delivery tool.

If you're looking for classroom/grade management software, gradebook, renweb will do most of what you need (paid, of course).

Some free alternatives:

Whatever you decide on, remember that it will take time to learn the program. Read up as much as you can on the freeware/open source alternatives before you bite.

Not much in the open source arena. Plenty of places still use moodle.
