I lied about the monkeys.

My old karate instructor/philosophy prof sent me a list of some good reading. Here's a list of feminist blogs for people who are interested. I haven't read something from all of them yet- I can't guarentee they'll be good. But what I've read from Jesebel so far is pretty good.

lol, had a funny feeling I forgot something:

now that the link is there, I can give a proper comment. Jezebel isn't bad, but I don't consider it a feminist blog, it's pop culture site, the same as the site that spawned it- Gawker. Jezebel happens to have a feminist slant on the celebs and stuff it covers. From what I've read, the whole Gawker media empire exploits it's writers, so I'm wary of supporting the site

The Guru was both horrified and fascinated by Feministing. He stumbled across it about 8 months ago and:

he agreed with them on a lot of basic points, but thought there was a tendecy to overreact, especially in the comment sections- until I showed him what the comments on broadsheet looked like, to put things in perspective.

You wouldn't, it was a conversation he and I had not long before the accident. I miss him too. .

I remember reading that a while back. I liked it.

One of the blogs cited another blog that criticized an article that criticized women for fighting, binge drinking, and throwing themselves at men. This one: http://hoydenabouttown.com/20091210.7046/girls-gone-wild-or-wild-women-or-we-never-had-nasty-sluts-when-i-were-a-lad/

The thing that confused me about the last article is they referred to this behavior as girls imitating male behavior (presumably not including throwing themselves at men). Not rowdy woman in and of themselves, but women who ‘try to be like men’. Don't really want to have said that anymore. But I’m wondering- is this how most people think?

In all honesty I always thought people who didn’t know women drank and got into fights were sheltered and maybe a little socially autistic, doomed to be disappointed by reality or just teach in Korea (not knocking it, just saying some people benefit more than others). But maybe in other parts of the western world women don’t do this? Goody-two-shoes aside- some people never get up to badness.

Most people are fine with people having a few drinks and some fun. Getting absolutely hammered and picking fights is another matter, and entirely distasteful, no matter who does it, in my opinion. At the same time though, when men behave that way, they get a free pass with the phrase "boys will be boys", after all, we can't expect men to be civilized.Wink There's no such equivalent phrase for women.

It always seemed to me that having lower standards for male behavior was sexist, as though men were inferior somehow, but I'm not sure many women would agree with me.

MollyBloom, was Marilyn really a fan of books? I don't know much about her in that respect.

I'm not sure, but there's a photo shoot by Eve Arnold where she just sits around and reads Ulysses, so my pictures come from that shoot.

I found a website where some older women undertook the task of reading the novel, and they blogged about it. On the site they said:

"If it's good enough for Marilyn then it's fine for us too.
Well yes it was and Eve Arnold the photographer reveals that when she met Marilyn for this 1952 photo shoot she was already reading Ulysses so this was no posed moment and I think the photos reveal that clearly. Marilyn reported that she liked the style of the book and would often read it aloud to better understand it, utilizing the Marilyn method which was to just open Ulysses anywhere and read it on short disorganized bursts."

I'm not sure where women regularly get hammered and start throwing punches, but I'm sure I don't want to go there. I have never seen drunk women physically fight each other, though maybe I just don't get out much?

The nastiest fight I ever saw was between two women at a LRT stop in Calgary. I heard yelling and when I looked around I saw one woman grab another. They struggled and went down, one quickly managed to get the upper hand and started viciously slamming the other's head into the concrete floor. That's when I quit watching and got the hell out of there. They were so enraged it didn't even occur to me at the time to try to stop it. They would have just pushed me down the stairs and kept going. They were bigger than me too. Embarassed I think that now I would do something regardless of all that, because I'm older and more confident. And stupider.

This happened at about 2 in the afternoon.
