I've been a pretty steady downloader for almost a decade now and I probably have 40 terabytes or so of books, movies, comics, games, TV shows, and music archived on hard drives and DVDs.

I've been thinking about all the time I waste downloading things, looking for new files, burning data to media, getting ratios up on websites, and all the money I've spent on hard drives, seedboxes (from time to time), and Usenet (when I don't want to bother with all the BS involved with torrent communities), and I'm now beginning to think if it's worth it.

I've probably only read/watched/played/listened to less than a 3 or 4 percent of what I've downloaded. I find that I don't have time to bother with all this digital data outside of acquiring it. The ridiculous notion that I would somehow enjoy all this stuff later on in life is becoming crazier and crazier to me.

Doesn't all this downloading stuff just get tiresome? Maybe I'm just an extreme case, but I sometimes wish I hadn't gotten into this at all. I could have spent that time and money actually improving myself in some way, acquiring new skills, taking classes, making movies, etc.

Ah well, I'm just wondering if anyone here feels the same way.

Absolutely. I never had anywhere near what you had but through high school and college I was always upgrading hard drives and downloading tons of stuff. But, everything I downloaded I was able to watch. Now, if I don't think I'll watch it again I just delete it. Plus, I don't watch very much new stuff anyway; only The Office and Kenny vs. Spenny.

I'm down to downloading about 1GB per month, plus I've only got about 300GB of media. I've also cut my iTunes library down to about 20GB (including FLAC/ALC material).

I spend my time studying Korean, riding the motorcycle, drinking, etc. instead of downloading. It feels very liberating.

I'm a freaking packrat when it comes to Data.

I always download TV shows, Anime, and movies with the intent on watching them. I end up not having enough time and they sit on my hard drives. I want to delete them, but I think to myself, "I still want to watch these. Maybe I'll have time soon to get to them."

I got a 1TB drive filled with TV shows, comic book scans, Anime, and movies that I've been "meaning to get to".

See, that's exactly how I am.

Well guys, thanks for your honest responses, I guess downloading easily gets out of hand and can deceptively become a top priority.

I have over 1000 DVDs burned back in Canada. I think over half of those are Korean Dramas I downloaded and burned for the wife. We watched probably 5 series, so like 30 discs. What a waste of time and money.

I have 3.5TB of stuff here at the house: just video. I'll be buying another 1TB drive in a week or so and replacing a 500GB drive.

I just keep stuff because I never know what I am going to need and when. I really don't have enough time to watch most of what I download, so in the past couple months I've slowed the downloading A LOT.

Yes, but its too expensive and the transfer speeds are also too slow.

Best to go with a TowerRaid (8bay) sata -> esata from SansDigital. Depending on how you want to set it up. If you dont want to use raid then you can max it out at 16TB. of course overtime just buy hard drives when u need them and keep adding.

Small b is bits.

Also, you were downloading that to your house. Do you have giga at your home?

Looks like you were maxing out your house line at 10-13MB/s. Still impressive from Korea to a seedbox.

substitute pron for "TV shows, Anime, and movies" and I'm right there with you Wink

I actually download some movies, shows, etc. that I have absolutely no intent on watching. It's just that it looks like a cool series that perhaps someone else I know would watch, or I enjoyed one movie in a certain genre and think why not just download as many vids in that category as possible.

i downlaoded about 1500 dvd quality movies b4 this blu ray hi res stuff came along...after that i thought *beep* it..just download the films i wanna watch. tv i wanna watch and music i really want...no collecting of stuff i think i might want. sure was addictive tho, and if u have time on your hands and this is your hobby why the hell not Smile

i just wonder if apple tv will be as big for hd video/tv on demand as it was for music downlaods on the internet. thats when i think alot of people will question whether the pay off for time spent downloading and cost of storage really is worth it.
