I'm curious if anyone here, especially in Seoul, has got markings like these showing up next to their doors. If you do, tell your apartment office or security guard. It could be nothing, or it could mean a burglar is casing your building.

Quote:
On the afternoon of the 17th 23-year old university student Ms. Park received that text message from a friend. Ms. Park lives by herself in an officetel in Sojae, Dongjak-gu in Seoul. Ms. Park ignored the message but out of curiousity she peered at the buzzer in the vestibule. Someone had used a ballpoint pen to write "β, XX" on it. Surprised, Ms. Park examined her neighbor's buzzer. It said "α, X". Other apartments had the roman letters J and K. β means "the home of a woman living alone". X means the number of times it was confirmed the occupant lives alone. That was the explanation of Ms. Park's friend.

Citizens are finding things written in the hallways next to their doors in officetels, one-room apartment buildings, and large apartment complexes. On the internet people are saying that, "thieves and burglars are writing this things in officetels and other places where women live alone." Some say that α means a place where a woman lives alone and β means a place where a man lives alone, while others say α means an empty home and X means a place where a woman lives alone. Others say there are detailed pictures describing apartment occupants, such as "one woman with permed hair." Rumors say the images are left by thieves and burglars for their crimes, and worry is intensifying.

Thanks for posting the article links. One of my students told me about this and I wasn't sure where she had heard it.

Following that conversation, I checked outside my officetel and there were suspicious symbols. Talked to security who said those shouldn't be there. A few days later I noticed them walking around with paint, blotting out the marks outside of a lot apartments. Interesting.

They've been put there by Nork sympathizers in preparation for the Nork invasion.

Aside from the 50 flyers/magnets posted next to my door from the same 3 Pizza/Chicken places, nope. But thanks for the heads-up. That's something to keep an eye out for.

Is there a symbol for, "Holy F***! Danger Will Robinson! Stay the **** away from this 집!"

If so, I might put it in front of my door.

Uh... if you cared to read the article properly, you will find that this has nothing to do with *foreigners*, but residents living in Korea is general.

OP = this is pretty scary stuff if it is true. I am a single mother with a young child, I sure as hell don't want people breaking in.. Taking my things is one thing, harming me or my kid is quite another..

During the 1930's depression era, Hobo's left symbols or marking to give messages to other bos that may come along. These symbols may tell of anything. It was a language of their own. Desperate times.

Hobo signs

There's an episode of MadMen*, the Hobo Code, where Don is flashing back to his childhood and a hobo marks their fencepost after the step-dad was mean to him.

When I lived in Spain we often had gitano (gypsy) ladies knocking on doors selling baskets or flowers. Because they had their own stalls at the marketplace and on the tourist streets, it really felt like they were casing the joint. Moreso because I worked for Security on base and knew the amount of break-ins reported, at least one per day. Every time I came home from work I'd hold my breath waiting to see if the place was ransacked or not.

* There's another episode in Season 3 called "The Gypsy and the Hobo".

The scariest part is how widespread it has become. CCTV should help find those responsible and hopefully someone can get answers.
