Have any of you worked in this kind of situation? I have worked in an opposite scenario and really enjoyed the camaraderie of my other coworkers. I am not worried about making friends as there are lots of other foreigners in the area and I have some friends from home nearby. Any thoughts would be welcome. |

I prefer being the only teacher. I did like working with and hanging out with other teachers, I still see them when I go into Seoul at times, but schools pit teachers against each other. I don't like that. If you are the only teacher, all the weight rests on you, good or bad. So, they have to be nicer to you instead of saying "Look how good teacher 3 is doing, you better be a good obedient teacher or we will replace you". They can do this by simply screwing you with your last pay, and then they give the other teachers your classes. I was on the receiving end of that in Korea.
I had to replace one teacher, but his schedule was nothing like what I agreed to in the interview or signed in the contract. Then, some part-timers left and we all had to change our hours again. Several teachers didn't get paid, and one left. I then had to take over his while they found another teacher.
I could go on, but you got the idea. With one teacher, you have a set number of students, you see them regularly and it is a more enjoyable experience. Then, after work or on weekends, meet up with other teachers. Best of both worlds if you ask me. Just make sure the hagwon owner is nice. |

l.i.k. is bang on, going solo in a haggie is great, esp. later when you gain rapport w/ wongjohnknucklehead and can choose books, help setting format etc. If you do go down that road, try a few lunches w/mums (I can hear the cry of: "not on my free time godammmit" already.) ....it's just a munch, you won't communicate properly anyhoo, and you won't pay so woogivesafk.....you'll be a star! Luck etc. |
