This is what is happening. I'm leaving my school for another public school in a better area. Apparently, using the head office is going to save money because my school won't have to use a private recruiting company. It's a good idea, in theory.
However, I asked my colleague if she had given any background preferences/requirements for the teacher who will replace me and she said she didn't.
Personally, I don't know how going through the GEPIK head office will fare. Sending off prerequisite credentials/experience preferences to multiple companies would have been the better choice, I believe. By this process, my school could get better candidates. Who lately is applying through the main GEPIK office, anyway? I thought the process had been decentralized and that prospective NETs were predominately applying through recruiters.
I was hoping that I could have some input or possibly an interview with the candidates. I really care about my students. Unfortunately none of this will happen. It seems the GEPIK head office is going to send a handful of resumes and my school will choose from that pile whom to interview. |

HA! Good luck. Most of the time, the schools don't give a rats behind about what exiting teachers think. In fact, they're probably going to make crap up about you being a bad teacher just to save face since you're leaving. |

Time is all that matters to them. When do they need a teacher and who can fill the spot for the lowest salary? |

My former school (which is also my current school once again) had me very involved in hiring the replacement teacher. I interviewed a few people and was able to show them what to look for in a resume to weed people out. |

You can get lucky using head office. Sometimes, experienced teachers ask Dain to help them find a good school...and if your school is good then their resume will be in a pile full of nerfs. Unfortunately...many schools still choose the teacher with the blondest hair, or the bluest eyes. Maybe if you can get your hands on the stack of resume's then you can at least be somewhat involved. |

I have always been disturbed by posts like the OP: " Im leaving my school and I care about them so much that I dont want just anybody teaching them." Give me a break. The next teacher chosen randomly may be a more skilled teacher than you. You will be forgotten by your school about 5 seconds after the new Whitey shows up. |

Isn't why this place doesn't speak English, among other reasons, and in turn isn't our job at least partially to work at that? |

The head office mostly recruits for the schools that some of the GEPIK officials work at. I bet you didn't know that. If another school has good connections with GEPIK, then you may also be assigned to that school. If a school has poor or no connections with GEPIK, GEPIK won't do anything to place you.
Maybe things have changed but I doubt it. |

Update: OK, a South African has been hired. However all my coworker/school knows is that the person is a man. The GEPIK department "selected from highly qualified people," I've been told. The vice principal is worried he's black. It's truly disappointing to hear this as a legitimate worry. I'm speechless. |

Do you have extensive experience interviewing and hiring English teachers in Korea? If not, it seem incredibly arrogant to place yourself as an authority in the matter, above your school and the GEPIK office. If the school directly asks for your input, give it in good faith. Otherwise (not to be rude, but in the spirit of making a direct point) butt out!!
Move on with what you judge is in your best interest and let the school do the same. |

The GEPIK head office this semester as have EPIK and SMOE have really been the only equal opportunity employers. They pretty much don't care about race, nationality or sex but only really care about credentials. They've pretty much taken the top 10% of candidates based on resumes.
Now individual schools that hire usually also take into account looks, race and nationality when it comes to hiring.
As for saving money overall the school itself may save money by going through the GEPIK office but then again since GEPIK would have given them the money it's the same thing. Schools get a budget to use on hiring a foreign teacher if they don't use it they lose it. |
