Interesting article about xenophobia and the racist organization Anti-English Spectrum by Deauwand Myers.

The Korea Times:

Bad Teacher

Cool

Sigh, why does every article written by an English teacher come off sounding as if it's written by a frustrated second-rate academic?

Ooooh he said 'reifies'.

I'm sure the editor---if there is one at that paper anymore---said by the third paragraph: "oooh the difficult word is so many, i think it good help for practicing the English."

A little too much shop talk for sure, but "the bad teacher is not Bad Teacher" line is spot on.

Once stupidity is institutionalized, like the Republican Party and the AES, the hatred they spew takes on the aura of respectability.

Look, I don't agree with many of the policies of the Republican Party any more than most posters here do. But demonizing them with a cheap insult like this antagonizes your readers, just like using pretentious language does.

My gosh, all of the seminars in grad school I sat through on "questioning the other" and other $50 terms that weren't necessary to explain simple principles. I'm glad this fellow has written the article, and a little shocked that the KT would print it, but he needs a copy of Strunk & White.

I had to have a short talk with one of my co-teachers about this. She asked why I didn't speak like him and use such obscure words. I just pointed to where it said he has a masters in English Lit. and explained that he was trying to prove that those years of study were good for something.

I liked the article, though it did sound a bit militant in its overall tone.

I just believe he is releasing all the frustration he feels as being a African-American English teacher in Korea. Simple as that.

And to come forward writing about it and calling out racism for what it is I have to give him some kudos.

I liked how he equates AES to pre-war Nazis and their policies toward the Jews of Europe.
However, I feel the article lost some aura because he, being an educated African-American, doesn't mention the plight of other African-Americans during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950's and 60's.

Nonetheless, he did hit on many key points regarding racism in this country.

I knew Deauwand's race would come up in this thread. He's damned because he didn't bring up African-Americans and the Civil Rights movement, but if he had broached it he'd be damned for it, too -- i.e. trumping up sympathy for blacks and, thus, his article. On Dave's, he can't win either way.

This nonsense about his race, his "militant" tone, and his use of an "obscure" word is interesting. Oh, and he has a master's degree, so what? I get the feeling a lot of the negative posters on this thread are thinking, "Oh, he's got an M.A., so he's my master, now?" (This is an anecdote from Chris Rock). It's comically easy to see through the negativity on this thread.

It's not unfortunate that the author did not write for the USA Today or Highlights magazine crowd. It's rather good that he assumes a bit of intellect on the part of those who read his article. It didn't offend me. If you were offended, you need to break out of your favorite novel of all time, Of Mice and Men, and try reading a bit more challenging material (e.g. NYT, Atlantic, The Economist).

For an English MA, the composition was not good, neither the reliance on emotive opinion over documentation.

And once again..why can't waegooks ever put up a good photo? This pic looks vaguely like some sort of angry thug. How about getting a professional picture done first- suit and tie, with a non-threatening smile perhaps?

SPOT ON! It is similar to the ignorant poster on the article thread, who brings up Farrakhan as a way to discredit the writer, simply because he is black. WTF - every time a black person discusses racism, they have to bring up the Civil Rights Movement and Farrakhan?

I think there are good points and less good points about the article, but it was overall making a needed point that has been discussed here on this board many times.

Well, I didn't like the photo either, proustme. It wasn't flattering, and can fan stereotypes, which is self-defeating. But, thinking people should be able to take the photo and his words together.

Agreed. He is a frequent contributor and SHOULD have a better photo somewhere.
