Back in high school, when I was a less mature person, I had a boyfriend who was this same argh men are men! type. I used to make him cry for fun. If his big tough heavy metal listening friends ever knew what a huge baby he actually was....

Ever since I've never taken a man who makes claims like that seriously at all.

Ego tripping again, Picasso? You just like weak men. Get over yourself. You're such a little kid.

Don't care a whit for weak men, actually. Which is why I learned early on to avoid men who carry on about how real men do this and real men don't do that. Not only are they insecure enough to let other people's opinions about them supersede their own, they're also line-followers, which is boring.

We've just got pretty different views on the world, Gipkik. You think women who step outside of society's rules for them are sluts, and men who step outside of society's rules for them are weak. I think the people who fall into both categories are generally the best to be had. Different strokes.

I don't think this fellow appreciates your humour.

Never have I appreciated more a person than one who can reconcile her internal inconsistencies. There is a definite and exciting beauty in the meandering line, a line that bears chaos but is driven by internal order, a natural construction of differing materials, that draws a line like a volcanic division, this way and that, paradox without contradiction.

Dave's is the most fun after a bit of wiskey. Like Gipkick, I'll stand by what I write. Except what I write will make sense. Different strokes indeed.

Think a little deeper. Step outside the box, if you will. There is thinking and there is regurgitation.

Anyways, let's get something straight here. I couldn't care a wit if a poster is man, woman, or alien. That isn't the point. Picasso comes across as a bully. I don't care if Picasso is a he, she or it. I am not fond of bullies. If Picasso was a man, I wouldn't write any differently. This is the internet for pete's sake. You're all just posters to me. And .38 Special, you are right. We do have different senses of humor. I guess mine doesn't include gleeful schadenfreude. Hey, I might find some of these posters hilarious in real life, but sometimes it doesn't translate. Different strokes for different folks, indeed.

Gipkik and I have a bit of history, you see. There was some thread a while back about the kind of girls you find in clubs.... kabrams remembers this, I'm sure. kabrams and I seem to have a lot of the same issues with a lot of the same people.

Negative capability, innit. Changed my life. Keats <3.

I'm sorry if I come across as a bully, Gipkik. I suppose I should have asked you nicely, way back when, to please not classify me as someone categorically unlovable by all men because I stood up to you about saying that women who go to clubs are damaged. Gleeful schadenfreude indeed.

Pretty sure you mean think outside the box. To all posters- If you think you are making a clever play on words with my name, I encourage you to stop and assess. Ask yourself:

1) Is anyone likely to have made this joke before? (I know my name is associated with that damn awful movie, and I kind of like reclaiming the quote. Chances are you aren't the second person to make that god awful connection)
2) Is it in any way related to whay I want to say? (If you want to make a point, why distract the readers with a vague and unrelated play on words).
3) Is it even funny? (This is the most difficult one for posters to answer themselves. I encourage you to try out your quote on at least three individuals who may not necessarily share all of your world views. If they all laugh, you are clear to post.)

Anyway, why are you making the pre-emptive gender defence? It seems sort of silly I might think you only object to being punched in the balls by girls. Sort of like when you walk into a room with a guilty looking kid and before you say anything he proclaims 'I didn't eat all the cookies'.

Must you bring up such old baggage? Oh, wow! You stood up to me. Big deal, really. Essentially, the only reason we crossed was because of your bullying tactics to others. I wanted you to admit culpability and responsibility in how you characterize men--and you did. I couldn't care less if bar girls are damaged or not. It's such a gross generalization. And I rarely generalize.

I've forgotten about it, so can you. Let's keep to the present.

Incidentally, concerning the topic. I don't have a problem with crying or with anyone else crying. As for cry babies? That's another story.

And of course you're lovable, Picasso. Just chill with the Internet swaggering.

Jeez. You mean I didn't regurgitate that phrase in the right, intellectually acceptable way? Embarassed

I promise to sign up for reeducation boot camp as soon as my classes finish.

But, let's think about "step outside the box" as an internally consistent metaphor for a moment. It's fundamentally sound in terms of meaning. The box is a concrete word and stepping out of it is a physical action. In fact, "thinking outside the box" is a contradiction in terms, conflating a mental act with a physical entity. You've given a perfect example of the distinction between independent thought (thinking) and educated indoctrination (regurgitation). Thanks for that.

Acceptable, Unacceptable

Your really talking about likes and dislikes here.

You might as well say tennis is unacceptable and football is.

Sorry, but everyone was less mature when they were 16, yet I'll best most didn't try to make others cry for fun. I don't think being mean-spirited or emotionally manipulative are simply traits of immaturity.

Picasso, did you steal all these guys lunch money or something?

Gentlemen, unless you spent your highschool years in auschwitz, it really wasn't that bad. Seek the therapy you need and move on.

Shocking! Brilliant! What a magnificent mind! You've determined what a metaphor is! It's a thing that compares a thing, but isn't that thing! Shocked Shocked Shocked

Give it a rest, bub. You're not impressing anyone. You do not step outside of a box metaphorically. You don't do it physically. You think outside of it.

Why?

*dramatic silence*

*heavy breathing of anticipation is heard from the audience*

It isn't real! It's a concept! It's an idea! It is not internally consistent, it is internally nothing, it is an idiom, a metaphor, and the best and worst that it can be is an awful pun.

This is why we can no longer be lovers. You watch too much Frazer. Watch Cheers. It will make you a better person.

She didn't steal my lunch money... She stole my heart! *swoon*

And sorry about the Gump reference I made a while back. I'll rectify an awful joke with an AWESOME joke.

Two muffins are baking in an oven. One muffin says: Good Lord, it's hot in here!

The second muffin replies: HOLY COW, A TALKING MUFFIN!
