http://cge.ken.go.kr/eng/

I was reading through some of the Q&A on GEPIKs website. I think it is great that GEPIK provides such a service, but feedback is not always present.

Lets start off on a positive foot. I think the best response is the one in response to professional development. Although the response sounded good, it didn't address how GEPIK would implement better professional development opportunities.

Many responses were left unanswered, such as the following:
Quote:
On 2008.02.22 a notice was posted on this website about Contract Renewal. The notice says that a Health Check Certificate is a requirement for renewal after March 15, 2008. What is a health check certificate and where do I get one? Searching the website www.g4f.go.kr, hikorea portal, does not return any results.

One response didn't even answer the question asked:
Quote:
Q:
What is the law regarding salary and alien cards? Must foreign teachers have their alien cards before they are paid their salary? Must foreign teachers have their alien cards before they receive their airfare reimbursement? I'm unsure of the policy. Thank you.

R:
Yes. To complete your E2 Visa status, you are required to obtain the alien card.

So the alien card is required for E2 visa status, even though I have an E2 visa in my passport before arriving. Foreign teachers must receive their alien registration card within a certain number of days after arriving in the country. This, ideally, should be taken care of before receiving air fare reimbursement, etc. that should not take longer than a month. The response received doesn't even come close to answering the question.

The next one is an excerpt from a Q&A and happens to be my favorite for reasons I will soon share. The emphases are mine.
Quote:
I have been asked by several teachers about payment for one way return flight ticket (to your home country). I have answered most common questions below to help any other teachers who are confused about this.

4) My school said they will only pay 75% of Korean air ticket, is this true?

Since 2007 we have removed that clause from our contract. Therefore, you will get reimbursed for 100% of return ticket(economy class air-fare only).

Hope this helps you all

Thank you,

Dain Bae

Really, my previous school told me that Dain Bae said they only had to pay 75%. My co-teacher called GEPIK right in front of me and I received an email from her stating as much. I only got 100% reimbursement after threatening to leave if the school was going to break the contract.

With a little work, this Q&A section could be really valuable. But it requires work. Don't give me the "we/they are overworked excuse." If Korea wants a professional reputation, then providing quality services is a requirement.

Not to be dismissive (as I do agree with you) but......GPOE doesn't care about the NETs, just the program. It would be a day's work to create a proper FAQ page and not much more work to update it every now and again.

Given that my first impression of Dain Bae was when she stated in the orientation "I'm looking for a husband", I'm not surprised.

How she got that job and keeps it shows there is more to "qualifications" to getting a job in this country.

So they want us to work for them without putting in the effort to attract us? Is that why they call us druggies and sex offenders while telling us how great it will be to work in Korea?

I have noticed that teachers get and keep jobs based upon who they know or "do." Yes, the ladies talk and the talk is not always pleasant.

When has GEPIK ever called its teachers druggies and sex offenders? When has Dain Bae or anyone ever said that? Really?

As for the Q&A section of the website...I never even knew that it existed! I thought that these days, they gave new teachers that Dr GEPIK book at Orientation, and if they have any questions they should call their 'regional reps'?

About the airfare question...you can't blame GEPIK if your co-teacher is a dirtbag who tries to rip you off 25% of the airfare!! It's not GEPIK's money. Your 2007 and beyond contract would have clearly stated that the "actual purchasing price" of the airfare will be reimbursed...not 75%. I'm not sure who your co-teacher called...but I doubt that they called GEPIK!

I actually do agree with the principle here...I think that if GEPIK is going to have this sort of Q&A service, then it should be done properly. I also think that if it pisses you off so much then you have every right to complain...but you should take a leaf out of your own book and complain...properly! Maybe email Dain Bae or your GEPIK Rep about the Q&A and your problems with it?

Not having a go at you, just suggesting a course of action. Like I said...I agree...if it's worth doing it's worth doing properly.

True. Otherwise it creates even more problems.
