Don't get me wrong, I love Linux, but every time I've installed Ubuntu/Eeebuntu/Mint/Slax, I've had hardware problems. I did manage to fix a few of them with help from their forums, but it was a painstakingly slow process. Other problems proved completely unfixable, and all I could do was wait for the next kernel. Hardware compatibility problems are not fun.

I can put up with the virus susceptibility of windows for the plain fact that it just simply works on whatever machine I stick it on.

I love Windows and have never had problems since 3.1, nor have I ever experienced a virus. Now that Windows 7 is out, I love MS' OS product-line even more!

But hey, at least I don't use Internet Explorer. I'm a Mozilla man!

I'd say I'm an above-average computer user who knows plenty of super-above-average users. Most are still on Windows, primarily, and have Linux running on some spare workstations to tinker around with.

EDIT: OP, sorry to hear about your computer issue. This thread kind of derailed. Wish I could help you, but maybe your gf DID accidentally press a few wrong buttons.

Dude, we've got a planet full of computer users -- 95%+ of which don't use Linux as their main OS because of just what we've stated. So keep in mind you're including most of the civilized world when you cut us down.

If a much larger share of people used Linux, it would be frought with virus issues, too. People don't bother creating viruses for something so few people use -- at least not many people do.

And by the way, my antivirus software is free and works very well.

Well, there you have it, folks. The world's best, most intelligent answer to why people stick with a POS like windows - 'cuz everyone else is. A reason every mother of a six year old child has countered - "if little Timmy jumped a bridge, would you do it, too?"

Sheep. Baaahhh....

No, it's because it just works for everyone else.

Unlike Linux.
