|
|
I just was interviewed by a recruiter who told me that it would be near impossible to secure a joint placement for my friend and me in Seoul (we both have 100 hour TESL certificates). She said if we wanted to be at the same school we would have to be willing to go to a different city. This caught me a bit off guard, as I thought most of the people (hence, most of the teaching positions) were in Seoul. So I have a few questions:
1.) Is the job market in Seoul really so tough that it would be "near impossible" to place two TESL certified teachers at the same school?
2.) Does anyone know of a recruiting agency that is more able to accommodate our request?
3.) We did start to look at other cities, in case it comes to that. We've narrowed it down to Busan and Daegu. What would be the benefits and drawbacks to each city?
If anyone can answer one or all of these questions, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks so much. |

If it is a hagwon, private school, it has to be a hagwon that has 2 openings ate the same time. the hagwons that i know o dont hire seasonally, but dispersed throughout the year. public schools... most dont have 2 native teachers.
if your recruiter doesnt have openings, then go to another. there are many to choose from, each has different opportunities. any city.
daegu is not small town, but no bigger than a big suburb. but because it is korea, it looks liek a small city, but just in comparison. know what i mean?
busan is close enough to seoul, in feeling, but it has a beach and relatively warmer weather. |

You may have more/better responses in the Job-related Discussion Forum.
The General Discussion Forum is usually reserved for idiotic banter with people with too much time on their hands. |

It's a combination of a flooded job market and what Matt said. (It's not that common that a hagwon needs two teachers at the same time.

Search the job section. There are a number of threads that discuss recruiting companies, ones recommended as well as ones to stay away from. Plus you'll get some helpful negotiating tips.

Those are fine cities, but, if I were in your situation, I would not hold out for a job at the same school. Just make sure you get good jobs in Seoul. You'll have similar schedules, and you won't be that far away from each other. Also, remember that at hagwons with two foreign teachers when one teacher goes on vacation, the other often has to cover his classes, which means you won't be able to go on vacation together. |
