no matter what time I go to bed, I am always wide awake at 4AM. I tried everything and nothing has worked so far. When evening comes I feel tired. I try to force myself to stay awake later, so I can sleep later, but that never seems to work. In the rare times that I have slept later, I still feel tired in the evening. Has anyone ever struggled with this and overcame it? I drink little coffee in the morning, no caffeine after noontime. Probably need to exercise more though |

The inability to sleep throughout the night is a symptom of both anxiety and depression. It stands to reason that people who suffer from anxiety and depression often awaken early. Melancholia implies the so-called biological symptoms of depression: early-morning waking; etc
Solution
When a patient with anxiety and depression is not getting a full night's sleep, a physician most likely will prescribe a drug that not only treats depression and anxiety, but also has a sedative affect.
Benefits
Symptoms of anxiety and depression are likely to diminish once proper treatment is administered and normal sleep is restored. |

I agree with the above poster.
You're very likely to be stressed out.
Not only that, your name 'keepongoing' suggests that you're in a stressful situation.
Me, I used to wake at 4:30 and then toss and turn till I had to go to work.
I bought a violin and now I annoy my noisy neighbours back with scales exercises scratched out endlessly. |

Just use the time to do something. Pills won't solve the problem. |

I had a very similar problem, but I was waking up about 2:30 to 3am every morning. It lasted about 6 months and it was brutal. I was exhausted all the time, but nothing I did seemed to help. I didn't go to the doctor because I didn't want a pill prescription. I think it was a combination of stress and anxiety for me.
Everything I've read about this problem suggests that diet and exercise play a way bigger role in a good sleep than most people seem to realize. Eating lots of fresh fruit and vegetables daily is a good start. Many people eat a lot of junk food but don't realize how hard it is on their body. I would eliminate the coffee and cut back on everything with sugar. You don't mention if you smoke or drink, but those also negatively affect your sleep, and in my opinion, should be eliminated if you're having sleep problems. |

It may be worthwhile getting checked out for sleep apnea or a variant. My brother has sleep apnea and struggled to get a good night's sleep for years. He now wears a mask that feeds him a mix of O2 and other gases and sleeps like a baby. |

Classic stress symptoms.
I had it in my last job in Korea. I found all the last minute changes and crack of dawn work phone calls gave me palpitations. I was waking up at 6am almost jumping out of bed and then my heart was beating so fast I couldn't get back to sleep.
Solution: change jobs; exercise (this will help a lot); cut out caffeine; get a yoga nidra tape and try it, it really, really helps; get a relaxation tape for going to sleep with, the hypnosis ones are brilliant and give you deeper sleep. |

Yup, this is common of stress, but before running to the doc to get a script, take into consideration some other options.
I'm not a fan of yoga, but I will second the above poster's advice when it comes to exercise. Get to a gym, however, cheap, and get into cardio (run, bike, elipt...). High-rep, low weight workouts help, too. On the weekends, weather permitting, get out for jogs or on a bike. I was in the OP's predicament, and exercise had me sleeping like a baby, stressed out or not!
Good luck, OP. Hope things pan out. |

You are battling with mild insomnia. As soon as you wake up take two benadryll and masturbate or have sex with someone. Sounds crazy, but the sex releases endodorphins and removes some negative thinking and the benadryll makes your body sluggish and tired. If that doesn't work...try meditation or xanax. |

I've had problems sleeping since high school. Not only that, I'm an active sleeper, moving around a lot, waking up a few times in the middle of the night, etc.
What's helped out a lot has been walking. I spend a few hours a day walking to and from school, running errands, around the neighborhood, etc. By the time I get home and get ready to sleep, I'm too tired to not sleep through the entire night. |

For sleep... this is pretty good advice.
Going to a gym is great for exercise...which in and of itself is great for sleep...however...it lacks sunlight.
Sunlight is essential for serotonin production...which in turn is essential for melotonin production...the sleep like a baby inducing drug
This time of year is common for S.A.D - Seasonal Affective Disorder.
Walking outdoors gives the advantage of exercise and sun exposure.
When walking...focus on deep breathing...then when you go to bed...focus again on deep breathing....slow and rythmic.
Best of luck with your sleep. |

Valerian root.(tea, capsules,etc...)
I suggest you do a bit of research on it before taking. |
