Good grief. Rolling Eyes

You pretty much just insulted every person who posted on this thread.

10 minutes to download,

10 minutes to make a bootable usb

I have installed office 2007 and I have to say it runs quick. Start up is fast, programs open fast music and video plays fine (haven't tried 720p yet tho)

Like your pirate style!

Does your netbook use the Intel Atom? Many netbooks do......here's some stats on the Itel Atom......

Performance

The performance of a single core Atom is about half that of a Celeron of the same clock rate. For example, the Atom N270 found in many netbooks such as the Eee PC can deliver around 3300 MIPS and 2.1 GFLOPS in standard benchmarks,[13] compared to 7400 MIPS and 3.9 GFLOPS for the similarly clocked (1.73 GHz) Pentium M 740.[14]

Half of a 1.7 Pentium Celeron.........thats rubbish....why buy something which has the computing power of 2003? Just get a lightweight laptop which can do it all in 2009 style!

In saying that, I have no doubt that the miniaturization of computers will mean that netbook sized computers will be worthwhile in about 5 years......

Not insulting anyone.....I realize that not everyone is a techie......so they buy what seems the right computer to buy without much background information. That's fine. That's the world of commerce and marketing. Go ahead. Buy what is being marketed to you right now.

15 inch laptops are to large and heavy and get too hot (because of their larger processor) to sit on your actual LAP for any length of time. Netbooks fill a large sitting on the couch, lying in bed, propped up on the table next to your tea and toast in the morning niche.

Again, I think the sales speak for themselves.

My old laptop is an intel 1995 running windows 95, a whole 1 gig harddrive, 32 mb of ram. However it still runs office 2003 fine, I can do word and excel fine, even listen to music and surf the internet.

The atom was designed with one purpose power saving. The laptop weighs 1 kg all up, I can carry it to work, when I go skiing coffee shops, and trips back home. You know what I am running at home, when I do any video editing I do it at home, I normally play games on the 360, or computer. I have a home server at home so I don't even need a decent hard drive space.

Yeah Eamo. I know you like your tech but you sound a bit rabid on this thread.

I got my netbook for portability and battery life and price. I need to use it around the house on my lap, on the subway if I want, in small classes etc. My wife uses our desktop for online study a lot. I have kids and don't want to leave a bigger laptop tethered to a power outlet. My netbook does everything I want it to do and it fits inside my SMALL backpack that I take everywhere neatly.

I had a 10inch laptop that developed a motherboard fault before making the netbook purchase a necessity. The old laptop now runs LinuxKidx on USB for my daughter Smile.

Saying that people who buy netbooks are only buying them because they are seen as hip is a tad simplistic.

Very Happy Eh, no it's not just me. There's a lot of backlash on the tech web about netbooks. Basically, because full-sized laptops have become so lightweight, less than 2kg's, they nullify the need for netbooks. You can now carry a 15'' laptop very easily.....so why buy something that has a yucky small screen (did I miss a meeting? Isn't large screen desirable?) 3 times less power and no optical drive?

Can you get one of those for 399,999. Admittedly my next laptop will probably be from the class of notebooks you just mentioned, but they are not the same thing.

Well, there's a computer that fits every person. Whatever your wife wants. No problem there.

Actually, my wife wanted to upgrade recently, you may have seen my ad on the Buy/Sell/Trade for our old Sony Vaio..........anyway, she ended up choosing a 13'' Toshiba Portege T130........first she wanted a 10'' netbook, but I pointed out the reasons for wanting that kind of extreme portability, we realized that she didn't need extreme portability for her daily routine.......so we decided on a kind of compromise....13''.....

As always with computing, you really need to identify your needs.

I want to get a netbook, but I read a review on the MSI Wind u100 and found out that the battery life is terrible, like 2.5 hours, when the screen brightness is adjusted to a decent level. A postive note was the netbook stayed amazingly cool.

Yes those cheap ones do have a bad battery life of only 2.5-3 hours. however you can also buy 6 or 9 cell replacement batteries
6 cells go for between 80-120,000 won while 9 cells between 120-150, 000.

Backlash smacklash.

I observe teachers in public school classrooms for a living and would have a hard time doing what I do without my Wind. I have a 14 inch Dell Tablet as well as another 15 inch Dell but part of my gig is that I try to keep a low profile in the classroom, and these machines are just too large.

The 1.6ghz Atom processor isn't any good for games, but for my purposes - Windows 7, MS One Note + MS Live Mesh - it does the job well. The 9 cell battery gets about 6-7 hours if the wifi's off. This is important in schools that don't have obvious places to plug in at the back of the classrooms. I'm good for the day.

Later tonight I'll be flying across Asia. I could take either of the Dells, but why would I want one of those big bulky things in my carry-on to yank out at security? I flew with the MSI Wind last summer to North America and to India in September, and it was bliss. Never again will I travel with a full-sized laptop.

Added bonus - the Msi Wind dual-boots into OSX like a dream. I rarely use this but have it on my machine for when I want to annoy my Apple snob colleagues.

Eamo, you're usually a rational sensible type - take the conventional wisdom on "tech webs" with a grain of salt.

My wind only gets about 1.5 hours. Really irritating. Can't even watch a movie or play around on it without having to plug it in.
