South Korea wants foreign women planning to marry local men learn Korean well enough to adapt to life there, a media report said.
We have decided to make the ability to speak the Korean language one of the major criteria next year when approving inter-racial marriages, Prime Minister Chung Un Chan said. His comment came Thursday as Seoul launched a committee to help multicultural families. Its function is to lower discriminatory barriers against foreign brides by providing job or educational programmes, Chung said. The prime minister added that the committees primary goal was to teach Korean to foreign brides and their children. The number of offspring of mixed marriages increased from 22,258 in 2007 to 58,007 in 2008 to about 103,484 in 2009

This much is true. However, the test of a more tolerant nation would be to allow the foreign brides to recognize speaking the native language would be greatly beneficial to themselves and their family, but allow them the choice as to learn it or not. Not force it upon them as a criteria for successful immigration. |

Maybe I'm not up to snuff in the 'country with the highest IQ', but isn't this a contradiction? |

Indeed. What a terrible country. All tolerant nations like Canada for example...oh wait now.

Looks like speaking one of Canada's official languages is a requirement for citizenship.
And the article does say that they will be teaching "foreign brides" Korean...presumably they are already married and have immigrated to the country.

Its a pretty light article. And doesn't really say where it got the info. I wonder if this is lost in translation and they mean that there will be a language requirement on the F2 series visa. |

It's not a bad idea, but it does assume that the married couple are here to stay permanently. It also assumes that knowing the language will actually help the spouse to assimilate Korean culture better. This may or may not happen. As many people here know, it isn't just about the language or comprehensibility.
Still, I think it's essential that anyone who lives here (or any country) should learn the language--staying for a year may be an exception. This will also help dissuade immigrants from creating self-contained ghettoes. The Chinese are notorious for investing money into a country, take Vietnam for example, sending over thousands of Chinese workers, sequestering them, and creating these little Chinas. These places fester and boil over eventually. |

i think to be a full-blown citizen (with voting rights, etc.) speaking korean is a reasonable requirement, as speaking french or english is in canada. however, i'm not sure that they're talking about requirements for citizenship here, as they may be talking about requirements for an f-2 visa or simply for a marriage license/permission to be sent over as a bride, and so i'm not sure how i feel about this policy - and won't until more details are available.
i also want to say that i agree with the gipkik that there are some serious assumptions implicit in the statement by the prime minister, which indicates that this policy could certainly act as a barrier instead of acting to remove one. it just really depends on how it is developed and implemented...

Prerequisite for marriage? Bad. Prerequisite for citizenship? Good. |

We have decided to make the ability to speak the Korean language one of the major criteria next year when approving inter-racial marriages, and citizenship are not the same thing.
Does the Canadian government speak in terms of "approving" inter-racial marriages? |

There's a massive difference between citizenship and apporving a marriage visa. |

Requiring approval for interracial marriages (i.e. marriages between Koreans and non-Koreans)
would be a disgusting policy. So much for Korea's push for "globalized individuals."
|
