So I need to pick books for the winter camp at my school. I have to pick a book for first, second and third grade. However, the max per book that I can spend is 9,000 won. Any recommendations? |

Do you *have* to use a book?
3-4 hours a day of English camp during vacation + textbook = bored and miserable students
I've found it's better to plan as many active activities as possible. Just do them in English. Cook something. Do a scavenger hunt/nature walk. Make picture books. Have a noraebang day. Mix in the odd worksheet or grammar point for reinforcement, but mostly just keep them as busy as possible, while also communicating in English. The poor little buggers are already attending a poor man's hagwon when they should be out riding their bikes, sleeping ridiculously late or, god forbid, in the pc bang. |

I had access to a classroom room with a projector at my school. I gathered a bunch of videos from YouTube and such. I would show extreme winter sports video clips. Snowmobile jumping, skeleton / luge, aerial skiing, etc. Total hit!
I found winter / Christmas videos with English subtitles. "Let it snow" might be a really good one considering the recent weather. Karaoke was a hit too!
I made them create a snow man using sheets of construction paper, scissors and glue. NO DRAWING. Just cut the shapes. New to them.
Activities were the reward and break from hard, difficult study.
I introduced them to ice hockey. The videos of hockey fights were shocking to them. They asked if I played hockey and fought. Of course not. I was a goalie. I brought in my goalie equipment on the last day (I played street and roller hockey occasionally in Korea) and they enjoyed dress up time. |
