I was wondering if anyone has been surfing in Korea, i have never had to go for 2 months without durfing before and it is driving me CRAZY!!! (as any surfer will understand!) I heard that there is some action in Busan but i cant find much on the web about it.
Any help would be amazing!! Feel free to PM me as I understand people might not want to have their spots advertised all over the internet! |

I went in Busan, forget the name of the beach. It was crap though. Its ok if your dying to do it but then again why not just spend your vacation in Bali and go mad about it? |

I feel your pain bro. I like to durf, too. ㅋㅋ
I asked this same topic about five years ago when I joined this site.
Surfable waves in Korea are pretty rare. However, occasionally it is possible to paddle out. Some seasons are better than others. Currently, the water is quite cold and a good 4/3 suit at least is needed, although I did get through my first winter with a 3/2. I really like to surf.
I have surfed many places (Cali, C.R., Indo, etc.) and realize that Korea is not a surfing destination. Due to the lack of consistency, it is very difficult for a beginner to learn here. If, as I suspect the OP is, you are a surfer and just need to get in the water from time to time, it is possible. Stoke is hard to explain to a non-surfer. The waves, fickle as they are, are much more rewarding when you do get on them. They are not world class by any means, but it can be enough to put a smile on a surfer's face.
PM me for more details. I can't PM, otherwise I would have. I think I have about 3 or 4 posts total. I have surfed in Korea way more than posting here. Hope that helps.

I'm not a surfer, but a friend is.
He says Jeju has the best surf and Busan has some. The best time of year is fall, second is spring. Although I image that during some of the typhoons in summer there might be some surf.
He said he had some 10 foot swells to ride in Jeju this fall.
There might be some other pockets of surf on the south coast or on some of the islands in the south. |

Haha, "stoke is hard to explain to a non surfer."
yeah, the entire concept blows my mind. I mean, what could possibly compare to standing on a fiberglass plank while balancing on a wave?
Dude, the stoke! |

Born and bred surfer and have lived here over 8 years. It's not even worth trying to surf in Korea. It's a let down every time.
There's nothing really worth surfing here, unless there's a typhoon.
If you really need a decent surfing fix, head over to Japan. There's a full surfing culture in Japan and it's only three hours by ferry from Busan and a couple to a few hours on a train and you'll be at beach with real surfable/sizable waves.
I can't remember the names of the places off hand but if you do a search you'll find plenty of info about surfing in Japan on the net. Southern Japan gets the best waves.
Just make sure you don't go just after a typhoon. The first time I went there was about 15 or so years ago for the world surf life saving championships. A typhoon had just blown out and the beach was a disaster area, literally, and they still held the competition .
The water looked like a muddy up torrential river and there was a dead dog on the shore first day of competition. Half of the Aussie team went home with ear infections.
Or as someone said before me, head over to Bali or another destination in South East Asia. It's not that expensive to get to good surfing destinations from Korea, and it's so much more worth it than chasing after decent waves in Korea that only come once a blue moon and then they don't even come for the blue moon sometimes.
Korea SUCKS for surfing!!! |

Surfing in Korean is virtually nil. GOOD surfing in Korea does not exist. |

This isn't surfer's paradise, but sometimes some fairly decent surf can be had.
Of course, if you compare it to the great surf locations, you will be disappointed. I prefer to be a glass is half-full type.
Better to try and enjoy what you have than sit and fester with hopelessness!
I'm in Busan and still a novice. Seongjeong & Haeundae are the spots here.
