Now it is time for the US to do their part and stop this practice all together. For people that proclaim to love their country so much, they sure want to leave it in any way possible. |

The United States cannot do that without having a constitutional amendment to make that go in effect. Some people who are concerned with the ties the children may have to the United States would want the family to have resided in the US for a period of time before giving birth to a child. It's a tall order to get people to change the constitution.
Also, some people in Canada complained when Israel bombed Lebanon that they had to airlift many Lebanese Canadians.
However, you will always find cases where people of various ethnic heritages will connect to their motherland. However, the more the world becomes a global village, the less common that will be. For instance, you don't hear so much of Italian Americans or Greek Americans wanting to go back to the old country unless they are so close to where they could work in the EU. I wouldn't blame Korean mothers for wanting their children to have American passports. You would maybe want that, too. |

Well, I wouldn't have too much of a problem with it if it weren't for the blatant, 24 hour nationalism that occurs here. It just seems contradictory to hold your country up as the greatest in the history of civilization and then to back door into another one. |

I think there is far bigger news from this article. Just a couple months ago they were talking about giving dual citizenship to foreigners who have been here for only 5 years, but:
Quote: |
Unlike the ministry's original plan, the Cabinet also decided to limit dual citizenship to foreign residents born and having lived here for more than 20 years. |
So basically anyone not born here is out.
but then it says below
Quote: |
"The ministry will grant them dual citizenship because the original plan already calls for granting dual citizenship to foreigners who have been adopted in Korea or married a Korean," Cha said |
so now its kind of unclear on exactly what is going on with this. |

So you know for a fact that the same people who are hyping the country are exactly the same people who are leaving it? |

Yesterday for class, students were asking/answering questions from a long list in small groups. We began sharing answers with the class. One of the questions was, "What's something you regret." I was pretty shocked when a young lady said, "I regret I'm Korean." I asked why. She said, "Because being Korean is pretty much worthless." I asked her to elaborate. She said, "You can't even use Korean outside of Korea. I said, "That's not true. You might be able to get a job with a Korean company outside of Korea. Then you could use your Korean.... companies like Samsung and LG are famous international companies." She said, "But they now require English."
Anyway, back on topic...
I discussed the anchor baby thing with several Koreans lately, and they all said that the law wavers so much, it could change in the future. They still consider it a worthwhile thing to do, if financially possible. |

Wow this just irritates me so much. I heard about a story of a lady leaving Mexico when she was 9 months prego (she was not supposed to be traveling obviously), and the kid was born on the plane...lucky for them - it was over US waters. Kid was born American. Irritates the crap out of me. |

why? would you rather have the kid end up having to sneak in later in life, work illegally, and not pay taxes? |

They are talking about two different groups here. The first addresses Koreans living in Korea with foreign citizenship, and their ability to gain Korean citizenship (dual citizen).
The second addresses foreigners living in Korea with foreign citizenship and their ability to gain Korean citizenship (dual citizen).
The goal for both is providing an easier route to dual citizenship, which Korea realizes is not only beneficial, but quickly becoming a necessity. |

On the other hand, the government decided to add Koreans, who have gained foreign nationality through marriage or adoption, to the list of people who are eligible for dual citizenship. |

Males will also have to pledge to fulfill mandatory military service. |
Well, no free lunches out there. It'd be a heck of a decision. Especially at my age, military service would make marryin' soon a challenge...and it's time to start on that road soon... |

The only thing that irritates me is the way they use the system. Pregnant mothers come to the U.S., have babies at hospitals and then can't pay the bills which have to be covered by taxpayer's money and then file and receive government aid for their U.S. born baby, all at taxpayer's expense. If you can pay your plane ticket to Guam, pay for your hospital bill, and have a baby, good for you. We can always use another legal U.S. citizen to pay taxes for our soon to be massive debt-incurring health care reform. If it's a problem that the legislation needs to be changed, then let the lawmakers change it. (By the way, this is about the longest post I have ever made ) |

There's an easy solution to the problem.
Change the customs regulations so that customs officers can ask the following questions when someone arrives in the country:
"Are you pregnant?"
"Do you intend to give birth to a child while visiting this country?"
If they say no to either question, and later on have a child, they would be guilty of lying to a customs officer. Impose a $10,000 fine for doing so.
If it turns out later that they went into labor early, they can offer medical evidence for it and they won't be charged. |
