I'm trying to find the figures, but I'm 90% sure Liverpool have one of the lower budgets over the past 5 years. Rafa buys mostly cheap 6/10 players and tries to turn them into 8/10 players. He succeeded with Kuyt, Benayoun, Mascherano, Riera. There have been plenty of failures using this strategy, though. He made a profit on Sissoko. I will admit there is a lot of dross in the squad and basically no depth beyond the first team.
Would be cool if they did, though. It works well in Milan.
|
They've spent nearly 200 million over his time in charge. I'll give you Benayoun and Riera, but Mascherano was already international class before arriving. Kuyt, on the other hand, is terribly overrated both before he arrived and now.
It works well in Milan because it has been an arrangement for decades. |

Rusty, i really like you and your posts, but you're way off with some of the things you say.
120,000 seater stadium? Well that would never happen for two reasons
A) cost
B) they wouldnt fill it. |
A)That's why I said ground share with Everton. though, I agree it will probably never happen.
B)You don't need to fill it week in week out. It would likely be worth having a stadium that size for the one time a year Inter or Barca roll by.

Old trafford has been littered with empty seats this season, the figures are WAY down on what they have been, but even the figures dont show the true story, as many season ticket holders simply choose not to attend every game that they are forced to buy tickets for under the automatic cup scheme.
If united cant fill 76,000 week in week out, how do you expect a "not big club" like Liverpool to sell out 120,000? |
Global depression could have something to do with lower turn out this year.

| Also, as a United fan who lives in Manchester and shares a territorial rivalry with Liverpool, i can tell you that they are indeed, a big club, in fact, one of the biggest and most widely supported in the world. |
I'm going to rapidly back pedal here and say I was talking comparatively, and I made a comparison. Also, what is the definition of "big"? Are Fulham big? Are Coventry big?

| Newcastle also, in terms of stadium and especially fans (who i believe are some of the best) are a truly massive club, and much bigger than the majority of premier league teams, all the more reason why them getting relegated was such big news. |

| Before you start making patronising comments to other posters about football and accusing people of being Liverpool fans you should probably take a step back and think maybe if you are in the wrong, The poster you jumped on is clearly a spurs fan as evidenced in his avatar, perhaps increase your knowledge of the game before you ridicule others of their "perceived lack of". |
He jumped on me. And when did I make patronising comments, ridicule or call into question other peoples' knowledge of the game? I have never done that.
Thanks for the stats.

| As i said at the start, I like you Rusty, but i cant stand to see Utd fans coming out with inaccurate stuff and berating other peoples opinions if they cant back it up. All utd fans get banded into the category of being clueless just because of the team they support, not all fans are like that. |
Whoa, whoa. I'm not a Utd fan. I'm a football fan. I support Sunderland for gosh sakes!
Stop saying I berated or ridiculed people! I only responded to a post, that I thought to be wrong. If anything Indytrucks was the one who did that to me! |

You missed the important part. Liverpool have some world class players. Gerrard, for a number of years, has been one of the best midfielders on the planet. Same deal with Torres. Newcastle haven't had any top class players since Shearer and that is why Liverpool won't go the same way as Newcastle any time soon. I should say that if Liverpool fail to qualify for the CL this year then that may change.
Any reference to Leeds being relegated will be ridiculed as they too didn't have any top class players |

Im not saying Liverpool dont have world class players and im not saying they're going to go down? That doesnt have anything to do with Newcastle being a big club, and even though Leeds are in what is technically the third division of English football, they are still a "big" club.
Rusty:
I probably just took your words out of context, sorry.
I dont think the extra cost of a 120,000 seater stadium would ever be recouperated through ticket sales, and with finances at pool as they are, they'll be lucky to get ANY new stadium, never mind a record breaking one.
Especially, as you point out, with the recession hitting fans.
Ticket sales decreases at utd IS partly due to the recession, but another large part of it is the amount of fans that have simply refused to renew their season ticket after the price hikes that the Glazers have implemented, and also the ACS "automatic cup scheme" in which any season ticket holders have to buy a ticket for every single game, including the early stages of the carling cup where reserves are put out. |

If I had the choice between Gerrard and Shay Given, I would be really conflicted.
Torres is miles ahead of anyone Newcastle had last season. As for the rest of the two squads, they aren't that much different.
Milner, Martins, Bassong, Owen, Beye would all be like for like replacements for most of Liverpool's squad. |

Really? Shay Given is the most overrated keeper in European football. Says a lot that he's never played for a top club. Gerrard has proven himself in the best league in the world and in the top European club competitions.
I disagree. I'll give you Milner and Bassong (though even Bassong would probably not get a game ahead of Carragher, Skrtel or Agger). Owen wouldn't displace Torres. He might displace N'Gog from the squad but that's only a might given that he hasn't exactly played particularly well since he left Real. Martins was exposed for exactly what he was at Newcastle - that is, all hype. Beye would not be a like for like replacement. No chance. |
