another great movie to check out that was only loved by the critics was "American Splendor" a very prosaic love story/bio pic. told in a most original way. I was floored by the scene where the actors walk off set and talk with the people they play in the movie.

Oh, and I just say "24 hour party people" and really liked it, but I am a big fan of Joy Division and Manchester, as a whole.

Wasn't the 25th hour directed by Spike Lee?

Damn. You beat me to 24 Hour Party People. Steve Coogan is awesome.

A good movie is "Downfall" (Der Untergang). One of its scenes is the one where Hitler goes nuts about his Xbox360 account being canceled in that Internet meme. Despite that, its a very good movie. Again not very "hidden', but not exactly mainstream.

Great stuff! I really liked Downfall.

Another movie that wasn't so famous that I liked was The Business of Strangers. Julia Stiles was really good in that.

Hah, never thought I'd hear about this one again. Never saw the live action one, the cartoon was awesome though.

while I'm on old cartoons:

Biker mice from mars.
I guess that's probably older than ten years now.

He was great in that movie, and also in "Tristam Shanty: A Cock and Bull Story"

I'll have to watch 25th Hour. I always liked Ed Norton--Rounders, American History X, Fight Club.

Sorry, no suggestions at this time for this thread.

Crossing Over (Harrison Ford) was a surprisingly good film in my books.

Crystal Antlers

Is that the same band, The Antlers who released "Hospice." That is a great, but very sad concept CD about a guy who's girlfriend is dying from cancer.

Another good CD is "xx" by "the xx"

In no way a hidden gem, but my favorite movie of the decade was Master and Commander and it stands up very well to repeated viewings.

In the last week I have watched 25th Hour and Let The Right One In because of recommendations from this board, and liked them both very much. I am not a vampire genre afficionado or anything, but Let The Right One In was pretty damn good. It was made in Sweden, but I watched the dubbed version. I hear it is already going to be remade, but I don't know how they can make it better, and instead will probably screw it up.

I also just watched another one not mentioned yet on this thread, but just suggested to me by a coworker, Sexy Beast (2000). It stars Ray Winstone, and Ben Kingsley as a gangster. Sir Ben Kingsley as a gangster? Yes, he makes you believe it!

What did you make of the ending?

You sort of hope and wish it will turn out like the fantasy sequence, but you know it won't and you know he doesn't deserve it to work out for him.

No the ending is what could have happened, what his father wanted to happen. The actuality was that he drove to the exit.

A hidden gem from '98 is "American Water" by Silver Jews. Probably the closest thing I have to a favorite album.[/i]

That's what I'm saying. You're kind of drawn into the sequence but then the rug is pulled out from under you. He goes to jail. That is what I was saying.

"Choke" is like a retelling of my life story, way underrated.
