i'm not sure if this has been asked before, but: what korean tv shows really float your boat?
i'm a big fan of "ASIA ASIA". the program where two fellas (i forget the names) head out to some immigrant part of town and meet a foreign worker from, you guessed it, ASIA ASIA!
in the first episode, what ensues is a life story of the poor guy or gal (genuinely moving stuff - those koreans know how to tug at the heart strings). the two lads then decide who has to go to the foreign worker's home country, deliver a bevy of consumer goods (hey, it's a korean show) to the family. and then bring some of the family members back to korea. the follow up episode is centered around the quest to find the family in another country and the suspenseful reunion. this is tv at it's finest. i challenge any cold blooded english teacher to tear his or her eyes from this program. it's like crack cocaine.
my only grievance with the show is how they say "pfffighting!" at the end of show.

actually that's...."whhhhhhiiiiiiting!!!!"
my personal favorite (with the exception of randi's new show) is any show with 5 or 6 borderline-homersexual nancy-boy pop stars and 5 or 6 hot hot hot twentysomething actresses playing love-match and hitting each other on the head with rubber hammers while we hear a soundtrack of constant ooooohhhing and aaaaaahhhhhing in the background.
gold, jerry....gold. |

The Home Shopping Channel for the products, or for the Russian models?

I love that game show where celebrities or so-called "talent" have to learn and sing a song on the spot. If one gets it wrong metal trays fall and conk them on the head. I think it triggers the 5 year-old in me because I still laugh every time the trays fall. |

I try to watch dramas, but I get turned off when it turns out most of the Korean guys are polished, polite, kind, warm-hearted, unselfish gentelmen. I have never seen that in the real world in Korea...
As for comedies, Koreans who paint their faces black and jump around like a monkey pretending to be black doesn't strike me a humour somehow.....
Korean and Japanese cartoons are about as entertaining as English cartoons.... if I want to watch a car transform into a robot and battle evil, I'll watch Transformers thank-you very much.....
The news is completely biased and one-sided. Anytime a foreigner commits a crime, BAM it's on TV. And if the foreigner is American BIG BAM. They just can't wait to make us yang noms and Americans in particular look like naughty little boys.....
Sports....hoooe--kay!! (with spit coming out of my mouth) I want to tell every single Korean this little bit of information right now: THE WORLD CUP IS OVER!!!!
Shopping Channels: Mmmmm Russian models in underwear....
Video Game Channels: If I wanted to watch people play video games, I'd go to PC Bang and look at the guy sitting beside me. At leats this way, I can ask the questions I want to ask, and not have to rely on the commentator to ask the questions he may or may not ask about the game. |

'whhhiiiiiting" - ahh, the chinese fish. it all makes sense to me now.
right on, eamo. for every bad comedy and drama, there is the "tray falling on the head show". that shht never gets old. girl of denz tells me they are singing old school songs - hence the school uniforms. now, if that show somehow took hold in japan... well, matko would have to send me tapes.

i'm guessing that korean tv shows are hugely profitable. primarily because the production values are extremely low (new trays this week - 50,000 won) and the "talent" gets paid jack squat. my wife says that all the big talent agencies push their talent to appear on as many shows as possible to stay in the public eye.
the one thing i love about korean talent....not an ounce of pride in the whole lot. they're pretty much all media whores who will do absolutely anything as long as there's a camera around.
one of the few exceptions is park ji yoon. she of the hot hot hot variety. i saw an interview with her and they asked her why she didn't appear on the dating or tray-on-head or other variety shows. she said that they were childish and just made the celebritites look like fools. the interviewers reaction was priceless, he basically said "well that's the point of the show isn't it?" she just rolled her eyes.
i always try to imagine kurt cobain in his prime appearing on an mtv dating show with oversized fuzzy mittens, holding a rubber hammer....a la every korean nancy-boy out there. being a celebrity in korea must blow to no end.

agreed, maryk.
you see a lot of these stars on 10-15 different shows. if you didn't know better you'd think all koreans look the same.
that said, i've heard park ji yoon avoids the tray show because she's worried the impact will make her eyes more crossed.

a little side note on hyori. she seems to be undergoing a liberation period of late. i've now seen her twice on tv showing....dare i even say it....cleavage.
if there's a trend i'd like to see sweep korea immediately, it would be this one. i can see the newspaper headlines already..."CLEAVAGE SYNDROME!"
i love how every trend in korea becomes a syndrome. my favorite (although short-lived) was Ha Ri Su syndrome.
"mom, get me to the hospital quick...i've caught Ha Ri Su syndrome from the boys on the playground!"
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" |

Remember a few years back when they used to have these really, really hot bra and panty models on TV during the day? Now, they have models wearing evening dresses and holding a bra/panty set.
This is regression at its worst.

You can still see that, they just moved it to around 11pm-1am on Dong-ah TV station. (The same channel that plays Friends)
I came across it when I set my VCR to tape an episode of friends, and then threw it on at school without checking. Let's just say it was embarassing fast forwarding through an hour of half naked girls modeling undies in a class full of highschool kids |
