How about a sticky where a rating system is created for users?
I don't mind a sticky as a service where users have to vouch that they had successful transactions, and there would be recommendations.
We could create a star type system like they have on e-bay to help you guys feel more protected. If you like that idea, we may possibly come up with some kind of system, so you all can feel better.
Let us know what you think of the idea.... I will create a thread for that explicit purpose... |
I thought more about it, and came up with a potential problem. It is that people can be crazy. Some people might sabotage somebody's rating without even buying anything. We need a way to rate both the buyer and seller, and to verify that the transaction really occurred if this rating system is to be implemented. Also, perhaps the mods can request information from both parties before posting feedback. If one party doesn't respond, then they can automatically assume the other party is being truthful. |

How about a warning banner on the top of each post in the buy/sell/trade forum.
I checked dkoryo's post log, and he looked like a helpful fellow. Nothing to suggest he'd cut and run.
I don't know how much the forum mods can do. Rating system is rough because of negative people on these forums (man there's a lot of them!) and because, as I understand it, most of the people that post on here are selling things as they leave, and they don't have much of a background on ESL cafe. How many times have you seen the "sorry can't PM" message here?
If you take out the two people who paid 100,000 and 300,000, this guy didn't really make a killing. 200,000.
20,000 of that was mine, plus the several hours spent on here trying to figure out what we can do...
Just be careful, and thanks to the mods for getting involved, and best of luck to you guys that try to get some money back. |

No offense, but what does this mean? The fact is that he did make 600k won or so. All he did was write up some listing and engage people in e-mail conversation. I'd say that's a killing. Even 200k won for work that probably, in total, took up MAYBE an hour isn't bad. |

Just picked up this thread. There is no way anyone could have known judging from the way he engaged the community here with the posts/emails I saw. I guess he had nothing to lose assuming his contract was ending and he decided to split with a bonus in his pocket. A quick Google search on the pseudonym brought up zilch. He covered his tracks well. What about having his IP address tracked or somethin'? It's really hard though given that a large portion of the items bought and sold here are based on the honor system when not doing a face-to-face.
Just the other day, I was out with my folks in Dongdaemun buying bath linens and such and the lady grossly overcharged us. It wasn't until I checked the number of items we bought and recalculated the price in front of her did she smile and "realize" her mistake. In this case, it wasn't hard, judging by the expression on the lady's face, that this mistake was indeed a dishonest one. A rare case really. |

I got it!!
Dave's BST Insurance.
We all chip in like 10,000 won and when someone gets screwed, they get some of the money and then we all have to chip in some more.
Maybe I have been following Obama's health care reform too much. |

600,000 is a lot of cash. But I'd put the question to you: how much money would you take to be potentially blacklisted from a country, in addition to having a civil (and possibly criminal) paper trail following you?
I know there are those who would take much less, and those that wouldn't think through how easy it is to follow a wire transfer. Morals aside, I wouldn't do it, just because the world's getting so global nowadays. I wouldn't want to be in a job interview in 5 years and get asked why I chose to steal a few dollars from somebody in Korea.
More to my original point, the burden should be on the buyers(myself being one of them), especially if they're giving large amounts of cash. I personally wouldn't send 300,000 for an item sight-unseen. I think it's great that the mods are willing to help, but I think it's up to the buyer to decide if the seller is legit.
My question to the forum would be: what further information would you want to determine the legitimacy of a poster (buyer or seller) on Daves?
I would want a real name, working phone number, address, and place of study/employment.
What else, and how could you confirm these things? (Couchsurfing seems to have a pretty good system on this.)
Sucks that this happened, but I look forward to some good coming out of this.
Merry Christmas all!

| I like the point system/rating system...I wrote about it on another post. Sure there are gunna be some idiots who think that it'd be a good drinking game to give people low scores or something...but if people are encouraged to post a little comment describing the exchange and satisfation level, it might make those comments seem more legit. |

Yeah, but the 600,000won is just the money he made from this board. How much did he make posting the same stuff on other expat sites?
Not bad for a few days worth of email. I still think you can get their registered name from the transfer screen at the bank, and then go report it as a cyber crime.
If he's still in the country, then there's a chance something can be done. |

Hi guys,
Sorry for the delay in this, but i have just found this in my PM inbox. I was interested in a laptop that this guy had for sale and this is the message that he sent me in early December.
"I am going to my new APT this weekend to work things out and organize.
I will bring the netbook with me if you don't want it shipped, it's near Hansung University Station on line 4 (two stops from Dongdaemun). Let me know a time you are free to meet me, I will be available all day Saturday and Sunday"
He wanted to meet to sell me this, but i did not have time and then I could not get hold of him from then one. In all my correspondence with him, he said he was moving to a new apartment in Seoul and not leaving the country. Don't know if this is of any help. |

Really dont understand why anyone would purchase items on the internet from a public forum and not pick it up in person.
I've sold stuff here on Dave's and shipped it out, but doesnt mean everyone will.
Not much recourse for this kind of stuff. I had it happen to me in the States and because it was only a 30dollar Bluetooth headset the police told me that it wouldnt even be worth my time trying to get this item from the seller.
Basically what happend was I called the sellers Local PD, connected to the Cyber Crime Division, they called the Seller, Seller says they shipped it out. I say I never recieved it, they say well since you purchased it from a Person and not a company with a Seller Policy, you can take them to small claims court but thatll cost more than the Headset |
