Had that happen many years ago. My contract read I couldn't date my students so she just switched teachers but remained at the same school. My boss at the time knew what was going on but thankfully she didn't care.
Is it really reasonable to resist falling in love with each other when those "warm fuzzies" just won't go away? Wink

I have two friends who ended up marrying their old students. I would guess there is a lot of opportunity for an adult student to fall for one of their teachers or vice versa.

I never taught young single female adults, so I don't know how the fuzzies work. I do remember when I taught a housewife class, a couple of them were hitting on me left and right. If I wasn't dating my wife at that time, I probably would have ended up taking one of them up on their offer to come have a beer while their husband was out of town Smile

I know of a hagwon that openly allows their adult teachers to date the students (adults, as well).

I don't see a problem with it as long as the student is a consenting adult and the teacher is not in a position to award favorable marks as a result of the relationship.

I think hagwons should advertise that these relationships are allowable. I don't know something like...

Come here to the best school to learn English and we also don't mind if you date the foreign teachers here.

And for recruiting new teachers...
Come here to the best school to teach English and we also don't mind if you date the students here.

Why not just have the English school be a front for a matchmaking service? Smile

I fell in love with my students constantly. Well, I used to when I was teaching adults. That's why I teach elementary kids now. I worked at a medical school, taught nurses, doctors, medical students. Oh, that was a difficult, but beautiful time. You have never seen anesthesiologists this hot before. This one doc among many comes to mind, who would come to class like spring had just arrived, legs going all the way to heaven and perfume laced hair. Chemistry? Like a summer thunder storm. And she was game, but married. I just wouldn't go there. Damn!

I've had many co-workers over the years marry their students. When it's students in their 30s I don't think there's so much danger of people being taken advantage of.

I always tell the story of my hogwan job in Mexico, where the owner would often encourage me to date the students. No secrets were necessary.

If they allow it, why not make it an escort service then? lol

I am not against it, but I think the image should be that you are coming to the hagwon to learn, not date. If dating happens, it should be a side thing when it comes to hagwons.

In Japan the old Nova organisation had a clause in their contracts prohibiting the dating students which some teachers took to court in Osaka and won on human rights grounds.

My understanding regarding most Korean Hagwons is this rule only comes up if you are dating multiple students and there are scenes.

Whilst the student and teacher relationship is a sacred thing in Korea, it really doesn't apply to us, that's why they call us instructors not teachers.

It was well known in Japan that quite a few Japanese females went to private English schools to meet the foreign men. It was perfectly natural to finish lessons for a day and have a group of star struck Japanese girls waiting for you a few meters down the street.

I even remember one extremely attractive housewife who would come to class without panties. Oh, the stories I could tell.

I have always thought it a bad idea to date students. Yes, there have been times that I enjoyed certain students, but you cannot create much romantic chemistry in a classroom. I don't spend time with students outside of the classroom.

I think that it is beautiful that two people fall in love and get married and where they meet becomes irrelevant if the relationship lasts.

However, the majority of dating experiences especially in Korea do not end well. If the relationship goes sour the school loses students. If one student leaves, he/she tends to take some with them.

I prefer to keep my professional life and personal life separate. It is just easier. Same goes with dating colleagues. I just wouldn't do it no matter how hot i thought they were.

Of course, my perspective is a little different because I am married, but even when I was single, I didn't think that it was a good idea.

Media reports about expat teachers negate your assertion.

I say be logical about this and most all use your brain.

Student in your class: no

Student not in your class: no problem as we are talking adults here.

This of course is in a Hakwon setting.

Come on guys,

I sure hope you don't need your classes to meet women in Asia... that's kinda sad.

If the only women that will actually spend some time and talk to you are your students, then you've got some problems.

Disclaimer: If you really are that unattractive, then I say it's okay.
