I know that the salaries are laughable, often $5/hour and you're only paid for the hours you teach...you really would be better off to work an extra year here and then just live in Thailand for a year and do nothing.
If you want to live in Southeast Asia go to Vietnam, you can make decent money there, live like a King/Queen and still save $700-800/month. |

Horsehit like this is always good for a few laughs.
But, if you want to listen to a fool who has never worked there and probably gleaned his info from another fool who talked to a drunk in a bar one night, then happily slurp up this load of [Mod Edit] and proceed accordingly. |

In Thailand you can net around $1000 a month in say Bangkok, down to
$600 a month in the provinces. If you want to work in say Ching Mai, the salary is low $600 a month and the competitiona high, because everybody wants to work in Ching Mai. Jobs in the provinces are very easy to get, and you can get away with doing a really really crappy job.
In Thailand you are supposed to have a work visa and a bachelors and I believe a TEFL cert. , but in the provinces they hire anybody. |

I taught for 3 years in Thailand and now 4 (and counting) in Korea. I prefer the higher salary and better standard of living here.
Don't get me wrong, Thailand is great, low cost of living, easy going people, nice beaches, etc., but you still have to put up with a lot of BS from Thai teachers, Immigration, touts, theives, police, etc.
It's not heaven vs. hell, as some might think.
And, as in Korea, it's not as easy to get work in Thailand as it once was. The requirements for teachers have tightened up and the number of hoops you are required to jump through have increased.
I still vacation in Thailand and plan to retire there. |

I'm so tired of this phrase. No ESL teacher anywhere in Asia lives like a king. In fact, only kings live like kings, and I'm not sure if they even do anymore. |

The standard of life for a King wasn't all that great. They had a lot of power over their subjects, but they were limited in a lot of other ways. e.g. the variety of food available to them compared to the supermarkets of today, the freedom to walk down the road without security, entertainment (queen victoria used to import sugar as a rare treat). People stared at you. Medical facilities were terrible. Paranoia. Not much on TV.
I think it's an apt metaphor, particularly for Korea (well, except for the medical facilities bit). |
