Bibimbab is mediocre at best. Anyone knowing nothing of Korean food would be more inclined to want to try the beef ribs.

Yeah, seems like someone dropped the ball. I'd say most people would enjoy galbi more. Be a shame for someone to conclude Korean food is lousy based on one meal. Some foods are great the first time, others take time to like or not. The diet is so different, a food like bibimbap looks pretty weird the first time it's in front of you. But meat cooking in front of you is a pleasure for most, I guess, Korean style, it's more fun and social, drinking, sitting around. Bibimbap is not like that.

Samgyup sal? I know Americans eat a lot of `$#! but I really doubt they'd pay for a thick slice of fat. Bacon is one thing as it's smoked but just fat, no, not gonna happen. Dak Galbi is great and I think would go over well as would galbi.

Korea advertises to the world yet again that they just don't give a damn about correct or coherent English.

쓰레기밥 is more like it. When I see a bowl of 비빔밥 I feel like someone went to a restaurant, pulled all the discarded left-over side dishes from the trash, and mixed them with rice. Disgusting.

Strongly agree.

Dolsot bibimbap is excellent, but normal bibimbap is gunky icky goo. A roasting hot dish makes all the difference.

It's doubly irritating because it's always served to foreign people.

The loudest person in the room is the weakest...? Would any other country ('cept the crazies up north) put an ad in one of the world's most famous newspapers just to boast about something that is mediocre? It's like a teenage girl wanting to get noticed, or something. God knows what the hell is going on in the mental processes that lead to such brilliance....

By the way, do you know Dokdo?

Perhaps in your haste to bash Korea, you failed to notice that this was NOT Korea or the Korean government who produced this ad. But that's understandable since facts and logic should never get in the way when bashing Koreans.

As it states clearly in the article it was the members of some Korean TV show. A few private citizens do not equate to Korea or its government. But like I said above, totally understandable. After all we can hardly expect one to distinguish between a few private citizens and an entire nation/government.

You see any American actors putting out full page ads suggesting Koreans eat a philly cheasesteak? Or Bono telling people to eat Irish Stew? How bout Beckham taking out adds on kidney pie? It'd be one think to promote, say korean beef as a way to promote the countries international trade but does anyone really make that much money off the bimbimbap trade?

Well as TUM said, it was a private company taking out an ad. Who knows what bonehead they had running their marketing dept. Heck for all we know it could have been the idea of some waygook.

I do see American based companies put American celebrities on Ads for American based products. Not just American companies but other ones as well. I'm sure other countries do it to.

I mean what the heck, a full page ad for BiBimBap isn't the silliest thing. Some church acting group took out a full page ad after Kathy Griffin gave her acceptance speech at some awards show that mocked Christ.

Now I will agree that they should promote an industry rather than a dish, but hey, who knows. I think most of us did too. Yeah we can burn out on it, but that happens with everything.

Now a full page ad for hite would deserve a total flaming/protest where hite is burned in effigy. Some things just flat out suck.

I enjoy BiBimpBap and so did most people back home. Most people have dug it the first time they ate it.

I lived in a city that had 8 Korean restuarants out of a population of 120,000, Most non-Koreans there had had BiBimBap at least once, and it was quite popular on campus and with the 'trendy' crowd. Heck, in certain circles if you DIDN'T know what it was or have on opinion on where the best BiBImBap was you were looked at as some sort of uncultured philistine. Ann Arbor- where its strange if you can't use chopsticks and have never eaten Ethiopian food. "You mean you've never gone to the Blue Nile?"

Seeing as how that's vaguely New Yorkish (at least that's how us Midwesterners view New Yorkers), it would make sense to push a dish and hype it up and give it snob appeal. Not to mention its a dish that is easily made into a vegetarian one, can have as many varieties as pizza, perceived to be healthy, can be eaten year-round (cold in summer- very refreshing and light, hot in winter), and can be sold both cheaply and "fancied up" it starts to make more and more sense why they pushed it. Set Bi Bim Bap up as the anti-fried rice. All of a sudden its market appeal just went up.

Bottom Line: Sure beats the processed crap we eat back home and call delicious. Even though I'd sell my right kidney for some of that processed crap right now.

And yet it still warms your heart to come on here and rip on it.

As I said, you see American actors shilling certain products that are export type products. Like say American milk or beef. Not a certain dish.

Those people should probably be punched in the kidneys. Hipster douchebags. It's one thing to enjoy new experiences, it's another to stick your nose in the air about it.

I have no problem with the dish, I think it's weird to take an add out to promote it. It's not an imported item. I could open a bimbimbap shop in the states, does little for Korea. If they were promoting an actual korean product it'd make a lot more sense to me.[/b]

Yeah I see your points.

I mean after all, it would make far more sense to promote the K-Beef/Korean tourism whatever. The BiBimBap angle is a little narrow.

But it IS a marketable dish.

Well I'm sure there are some exceptions to the rule, but as a general rule you're probably on.

Exactly the type of clientele I hope to attract to my overpriced Asian Fusion restaurant.

Oh no doubt, but they've got money and they're willing to spend it to be a hipster doofus.

Just saying, why not market to them?

Most true Ann Arborites laugh at Ann Arbor's pretentiousness. At the same time we take a weird pride in it. At the same time it was nice growing up in a city where people did want to try new things.

The youtube video link at the bottom of that page pretty much sums Korea up.

That's what passes for comedy in this country. Speaking terrible English and throwing out random obnoxious phrases is funny here for some reason. The stupider your English is or the more you can butcher a phrase, the better the comedian you are. This same crap is on TV every night here. If you wonder why kids in this country yell out at foreigners all the time, this is where they learn it from.

Those idiots are such jacka$$es.

And what does all that have to do with my point which was it was not Korea who took out this ad, but private citizens? Simply posting facts, does not equate to agreement or disagreement. But if it comes to that, I feel that people in a developed country are free to post any ads they wish as long as they do not violate the law of the land. And people are totally free to disagree with the ads...but if they wish to deliberately misrepresent the facts in order to push an agenda they should expect to get called on it.

This stuff is embarrassing. I just spent the last 8 minutes shaking my head saying, "Jesus, I am part of the education system that unleashed these idiots on the world." I am actually kind of sad my country men and women were so polite, a video of those guys getting decked for acting like idiots of the streets of New York could have been a valuable teaching tool.
