Recruitment company tell me it'll be january before I hear anything. This seems to be the general experience but has anyone heard if it'll be early Jan for contracts and placements? |

There are still some EPIK jobs being advertised, but I don't know if the ads are legit or just a bait and switch scam.
EPIK does hire off and on, because teachers leave mid-contract or what have you. In some cases, the previous teacher may have been hired mid-season, so their contract will end mid-season. |

Funny you say that, I was offered a position in November in Gangwon-do and sent in my documents to secure the position. Now they are telling me there are no jobs in Gangwon-do with EPIK and they are placing me in the Gyeonggi province which is normally controlled by GEPIK, a different program. |

Mmm, well technically I am scheduled for an interview on 1/4 with the head of POE for Gangwon Do...my recruiter says they accepted my application, from what I understand it is not the same as being hired through EPIK, although the schools and the contract are the same...I have also noticed several advertisements on HiTeacher and Work N Play for Gangwon Do. I'll be sure to let you know once I have my interview.

yeah EPIK cannot place you in a GEPIK position. they are to totally different things. your recruiter may be able to place you, but you will have to do another interview with the school, and nothing is secure until they have agreed to you. |

Nope! Believe me I was shocked too.
GEPIK just recently (Within a week and a half) asked EPIK to hire 20 new teachers for March 2010 to start at the same time as EPIK teachers do. If you look at the updated list of positions offered with EPIK for March 2010 than you will see 20 new Gyeonggi Province positions courtesy of GEPIK.
When my recruiter informed me there MIGHT (Might is the key word) not be any positions for EPIK in Gangwon, just like how they cut 100+ Busan jobs just recently, she had me fill out two more documents and send them to her. (This was after I had already sent in my documents and was confirmed for Gangwon last month) She just e-mailed me yesterday and said that EPIK has confirmed that I have secured one of the 20 positions for one of the newly added Gyeonggi positions. |

This is my first post. I had my interview for EPIK on the fri before x-mas and passed it. I had already gotten everything I needed to complete the application process apart from my criminal record check and getting my degree apostilled. Both of these have been couriered to the government departments in NZ but it will take untill at least the 5th of Jan as this is when they reopen after the xmas/ new year holidays. I phoned up my EPIK coordinator and explained this to her and she said that I would probably be put on a waiting list. Just wanted to know if there is anyone else in my position, has anyone been on a waiting list before and has anyone applied at a similar time to me and been told anything different. |

calmac, I don't think there ever has been a waiting list before. This is only the second semester that applicants have outnumbered positions. I'm afraid it might not be good news. Just make sure you're flexible to go anywhere they want to send you, and have other plans just in case!! |

any time they tell you about a waiting list its because they dont have a job for you. the applicants were too high for EPIK last time as well, unless you wanted to be out in the boonies. |

I have said to my coordinator that I didn't mind where I went. She said that once they receive my documents she would keep me informed as to what my options will be. I got told about the strong possibility of there being a second orientation in April because of other people pulling out for what ever reason. I got told I could reapply for Oct without having to send my documents in but I would still have to do another interview. I don't get that though surely my criminal record check would have expired by then. |

Personally, I think the timeframe really just depends on your recruiter's motivation (not workload) and how often you email him/her to check in.
I turned in all my application October 8, interviewed November 8 and was accepted the same day. December 16, I was told the city where I would be working - Ulsan. This was one of my top choices.
However, I was not "officially" placed in Ulsan until EPIK reviewed my paperwork. This was around December 29. This was when I received information about obtaining a visa and booking a flight.
My contract, which is needed to apply for the visa, was sent out January 7 and should arrive this Monday (January 11).
Of course, between all these emails, I sent my recruiter any questions I could come up with about this whole process, arriving in Korea, and living/teaching there. I think doing so showed her I was serious (not to say others with aren't serious) about all this and really kept her on her toes.
I originally applied to go to Korea for the term beginning August 2009, however my passport did not arrive in time. Not sure if this gave me a leg up on things... I even ended up with two recruiters (another was working through KOTRA) for a bit.
Overall, each recruiter has been very helpful. Although my second recruiter seems a bit scatter-brained at times, she's been very helpful.
Hope this helps... |
