I'm curious about this. It seems like a pretty high percentage of topics on the board are Seoul-centric. In the Buy/Sell forum, in half of the threads people just say "I'm at _____ subway stop" without listing a city, which makes it pretty obvious what city they're in.

To the people who live there: is the life considerably better than living in one of the other cities, like Busan or Daegu? I live in Daegu myself, but I'm considering doing a year in Seoul just to experience it.

I lived in Taegu for two years and a satellite city of Seoul after that. I much preferred the latter as I could get into Seoul within an hour. Taegu is huge but the lifestyle is still very provincial compared to Seoul, IMHO.

Unless you plan on being out in Hongdae/Kangnam/Itaewon every night, Seoul is a bigger version of just about any other Korean city (Daegu included), with 10x the traffic, noise, pollution, and rudeness of any other K-city. I lived there for a year and couldn't wait to get out.

I live in a smaller town, and guess what? I still have the galbi joints, the neon-light downtown area with the 'hofs', 'western bars' and 'foreign' styled restaurants, and a couple of decent supermarkets. Seoul isn't worth the hassle if you ask me. Sure, it's cool to visit and get lost for a while, but like any big metropolis, unless you're in the top 10% of the income bracket, it's the same crappy rat race as anywhere else once you live there.

For those with the visa/inclination, Seoul is a good place for getting gigs teaching business English at companies.

Maybe Busan or other larger cities are good for that, as well. I dunno.

I moved to Seoul cos i wanted to be in "Hongdae/Kangnam/Itaewon every night" (to quote Thrylos)...well maybe not every night for me.

The regular korean hofs and so called 'foreign bars' are way too korean and crap (doesnt korean and crapness go together?....it does when it comes to nightlife in my opinion).

The people in Seoul are much more cosmopolitan....they won't stare at you open mouthed. They will stare at you elsewhere, even in the other big cities (busan, incheon, and the two D cities).

But in other ways Seoul is just like a bigger version of the alternative cities....the same cinemas, hofs, korean restaurants etc.

Since you live in Daegu and already are somewhat familiar with korean life, come to Seoul if you're looking for significantly more choice in NIGHTLIFE and FOREIGN RESTAURANTS. MMmmm, i just had a nice mexican meal yesterday. I might go for Italian tomorrow. You couldn't do that so easily in Daegu.

Decent Italian can be found in Daegu. Mexican not so much. You have me intrigued.

My problem with Daegu is that it seems like all the foreigners frequent the same 5 or 6 bars. I've gone to party in Seoul four or five times, and it seemed like the nightlife was a lot more varied.

Back to my original question though, since I am genuinely curious, does anyone know how many NETs live in Seoul relative to the rest of Korea?

Daegu now has a really nice Mexican place run by a Korean-Mexican from Boston. Called Leo Chow's and it's near the cell phone street. I liked the one in Seoul a little more, but the Daegu joint is good.

Just saying.
