My husband and I are considering coming to Korea with our 9 month old daughter. We've spent 2+ years teaching in Korea, but that was before the baby. We'd like to live outside of the Seoul area ... possibly in a smaller town in southern part of the country. I know that this will limit our childcare options, but does anyone know if it's possible to hire a nanny in a small town? Also, are there group daycare options once she's a bit older?

Yes and yes.

www.okhelper.com and www.sitternet.co.kr are good places to start - though you will need to be able to read Korean to look at the site.

Alternatively, if you're not in too small a town, there should be a YWCA, which provides a babysitting service.

EDITED: Sorry got the website address of the second site wrong.

Great site. Thanks. I'm shocked that there is actually a babysitter listed in our small town.

Does anyone know what the going rates are? I'd like to have a general idea before we contact one.

It really depends on how often you have your nanny come to your home.

If it's once a week, then it's about 5-6,000 an hour.

Otherwise, I am paying 350,000 a month, 4 days (Mondays to Thursdays) a week, 5 hours a day.

So it's around 4,000 an hour, a bit more if there are fewer weekdays, or if I decide to take my daughter to wherever I'm going and giving the nanny a feww day-off (I pay her 350,000 regardless of how many days she works, extra pay if she works outside of our agreed days and time).

Great! Thanks for the link! I was afraid I'd have to limit the job search to Seoul/Gyeonggi, but it looks like I have lots of options.
