I found this article disgusting

``It would be tough for Indian teachers to compete with other native English speaking teachers, unless they take lower salaries,'' he added. |
and later they report

The ministry is currently discussing the wage issue with the Indian embassy here. The embassy says the ministry has assured it that the terms would be "comparable'' to what is presently offered to other teachers. |
What exactly is "comparable" if you know its not the same?
Because the GDP is lower than that of the E-7 nations?
Because the Rupee is worth less than the pound? |

Have you ever been to India? For the most part, their pronunciation is atrocious and sentence structure is completely bassackwards. |

I have no problem with them hiring Indian teachers, but I think they would have to be picky.
My gf graduated from a good school in Calcutta with a Masters in English and her along with most of the other graduates from her school, could teach in Korea.
The masses in India have a really strong accent and it's next to impossible to understand them, but there is definitely a bunch of qualified English Teachers in India.
The only problem is they would probably want similar pay to what we are making as many of them are from the middle-upper class and have had a similar upbringing to people from Western countries.
If they start hiring random Indians, then there will be more problems with English Education in Korea. |

Ever called a call center and had no idea what they were saying? Just as strongly accented scots and irish can find it much harder to get a job and can't get some of the higher paying ones. There are different forms of English and the indian one is simply not as in demand as the "american" form. |

There's nothing wrong with the article. Of course they will be paid less. Why do you think they are hiring indians in the first place? Because they can't get enough teachers from the countries which are already eligible? Yeah, right.
They only need to pay the Indians half of our salary and they will still be coming. |

Indians should be paid equally, just like everyone else. |

Everyone is paid equally, except for Indians?
They will be paid what employers think they are worth. End of story. |

It's completely unfair to pay someone less based on their skin color.
We don't pay South Africans less than Canadians at our school. We don't pay Americans more than Brits. Everyone follows the same pay scale.
There should be no discrimination in pay. To pay someone less because of their skin color is 100% pure racism. |

They are not receiving lower pay based upon their skin color! It's based on who is considered a native speaker of English by the Korean government. |

It's not the colour of their skin, an indian with passport and degree from one of the 7 is on the same pay scale as a white or black person. The fact they find it harder to get a job is racism however, but that is not the issue at hand |

I think it is quite obvious that they are not paying anyone less based on their sking color. The fact is, you can pay indians half of what we earn and they will still be making good money relative to us. They can go back home having saved up a considerable amount of money. Think about it. It's not racism, it's just business.
They want to cut down the costs of English education and they have found a "solution". I personally don't think it's a good way to cut the costs of English education but that's not the point of this post.
Indians will be happy to come for less and Koreans will be happy to save money. I think some of you are scared because others are willing to accept a lower pay grade to "do the same job". |

That's right! Teaching skills, knowledge and experience can not be defined using skin color. The mind is a beautiful thing, and apart from cultural differences, everybody has one encased inside a protective skull that is the same color under all skin types. We all bleed red, too.
Racism is truly an inhuman phenomenon of hate and fear. |

Indians will get paid the exact amount it takes to get them to come to Korea in the numbers desired by the Korean government. And not a rupee more. |
