I have read a few threads about this school and I have heard some bad things, but also have heard things that go against those bad posts. I am considering applying for a position there.

I have a few questions about the school if anyone can answer.

The school states they, "have a 3 bedroom apartment, one for each foreign teacher."

Does this mean one room for each foreign teacher or one apartment with 3 rooms for each foreign teacher? Call me crazy but it can be interpreted either way. I may be just a bit too paranoid. I believe it's one apartment with 3 bedrooms, and each foreigner gets an apartment similar to that. How are the apartments? Are they in an apartment complex or on the military grounds? Do they have a lot of rules like university housing arrangements? I plan to live with my fiance and I want to know if there will be any problems.

What is the area like around the apartment? It doesn't really tell us much about the area, other than the school is '15 minutes by bus to jamsil' which means the school could be in the middle of no where.

What exactly does this school do that is unlike any other school? From what I have read it seems like they are just as ****** as any other school, and the people posting problems didn't seem to post any proof and didn't seem like they worked there (maybe fired and posted out of 'revenge').

How are the hours? I have not seen a single post about the hours nor does their ad say anything about hours other than 12-14 hours of teaching a week.

Does anyone work there currently or recently and can provide some info about the school these days?

Thanks alot~ Very Happy

Probably a shared apartment. Although a 3 room apartment might be the meaning also.

I have no idea and it's a deal breaker for me. If there is shared housing it's not going to work out for me. Through the other posts on the forum I noticed no one complained about the apartments or said it had shared housing. Can anyone confirm it?

Hi,

I used to work at the AIS as a writer. The teacher's apartments are rather nice, large and fairly new. It is a 3-bedroom apartment. You don't share it with other teachers (unless you wanted to, for some reason). The bad thing about the apartment is that it is next to the base, meaning that it is not near anything else. At all. But I wouldn't worry about the actual apartment itself.

I heard after you are hired they want you to pay key money on the apartment and that the apartment is completly unfurnished.

Good luck with that.

True for the writers there. My apartment didn't have a fridge or anything. Key money was 1.5 mil. I'm not sure about the teachers' apartments. Probably the same thing, so you might want to find out about that.

Yeah that's about right for the hours. It's part-time and you do not get a full-time salary--you get paid by how many classes you teach. The schedules come out on either Friday or Monday, meaning you might not know your teaching schedule for the week until Monday morning. Sometimes the schedules are split, which means you'll get about an hour of exercise walking back and forth that day. Bonus.

The apartments are in the middle of nowhere. There's a tiny "supa" and a terrible Korean "supa"-style PX that sells Jim Beam for 17,000 won. Nothing else is within walking distance. Bus comes once an hour.

You heard? Can any one confirm it?

It doesn't make much sense to give a 3 bedroom apartment to someone completely unfurnished. I expect at least a bed, fridge, tv, closet, table and a desk of some sort. If possible I would get kitchen things included in the contract as well.

Key money? I dislike that but it's not a deal breaker (depending how much it is).

How much money did you make off 12-14 hours of classes weekly?

Instead of being demanding and pushy and completely ungrateful to someone who tried to help you out, how about contacting the school yourself and asking these questions? I went out of my way to try to help you when I did not need to. Now maybe do your own research, ingrate.

I made it quite clear that I was not a teacher there.

Yes, my post was directed at alpope not yours, given the time stamp is only 2 mins apart I thought you would see that. It was alpope that said, "I heard."

I have contacted the school and the person that posted the ad, their email is [email protected]. I have not had a single good response from them and everything they have sent was rushed and arrogant in my opinion. Not that I expected anything different from a military man.

Still have not had any constructive response from the school. They pretty much shrugged it all off.

The edit was for you, which was asking about how much money you can make during the part time work schedule since you posted about the pay being part time. I didn't mark the edit though, didn't think I needed to Very Happy

EDIT:

I know you are/were a writer but I figure since you know so much you may even know about how much people were/are being paid. I only work 12-15 hours a week now and I get paid salary, so it would not be too wise to pass up my current job if I am going to be making half the money.

Yeah, my bad. I shouldn't post right when I wake up. Sour mood, cloudy mind, bad results.

I think the teachers earn in the low 2.x range. There are also some months when they get paid hardly anything because of breaks between terms. No classes = no pay.

Honestly I'd give it a pass unless I was hard up for something. The isolation is hard to get over. There's really nothing nearby. No restaurants or anything. Plus the lead guy at the school (Mr. Jang) is an arrogant *beep*. All this for a measly hagwon salary. Pretty rotten deal.

There's been too much bad press about that school and the students to consider it worthwhile.

3 options.

1. I made it up to deliberatly decieve you. Look at my posting history and make up your own mind.

2. To help with your query I'm passing on something a friend has told me after interviewing there.
Again, decide for yourself.

3. To help with your query I'm telling you something I heard myself in an interview there and I don't want to open myself to any crazy libel claims from hurt business.

This is the internet, not a court of law or someones doctoral dissertation.
If you don't want to believe something cool. If you do, buyer beware.
But I'm not going to do your leg-work for you.

I would like all parties to note that the convo went on this long with nobody pointing out that the words "Korean Military Intelligence" are generally a good sign that you are entering a cluster *beep*.
I wish you the best, OP. (wince)

I have been looking for a military position for quite some time, and have even posted before asking about others schools. It seems like the Korean Army Intelligence school in Jamsil is the only one remotely close to Seoul that I have found. I need to stay within range of my fiance's family. The reason I am looking into military schools is because I have the intention to get more involved with the military in the future and I want experience there if I can get it. I wouldn't even be curious about a job that has such horrible reviews unless I had my own motives. It will help my future career if I can get experience in a military school, but on the downside this school does seem like a crap shoot. I am trying to figure out just how bad it is.

I am hesitating a lot about it from what I have read and what every one has said here.

My alternative would be a position at a YBM school for teaching adults. It's a step away from my career goals but it's still on the right track. As long as I get away from teaching children I will be on the right path.

I had posted this thread looking for other military schools, http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=173424&highlight=

This has been something I put time and effort into. I have until April to line up a new job and I am just trying to do my homework and make sure I know what I am doing. You guys have helped a lot, and if there is anything else anyone can add it would be great too
Very Happy
